Meet Rabbi Batshit

Author of Kosher Jesus.... certain to annoy the shit out of fundies and jews, alike!

Quote:Q: Studying Jesus, you have concluded that some Christians have misconstrued his advice to "love your enemies" and "turn the other cheek." Why?

A: They're often misused as a justification for pacifism. Jesus resisted the brutality of the Romans. Jesus said to love your enemies. He never said to love God's enemies. Your enemy is the guy who took your parking space. Jesus said overlook it; I agree 1,000 percent. He never says love the Emperor Caligula, who's killing everybody in ancient Judea.

Caligula never killed anyone in Judea. The province was peaceful under his reign. Caligula did order the governor of Syria, Publius Petronius, to put a statue of Caligula in the temple but Petronius delayed until Caligula was dead."

Maybe he's confusing Caligula with Tiberius.

Of course, I fail to see just where Boteach can be considered to be "batshit." Sure, he may be a rabbi writing about Jesus, but he seems to be writing a somewhat straightforward appraisal of what Jesus (if he existed) would have been like as a Jew. Is it the fact that he was close with Michael Jackson?

Judea was actually fairly peaceful under Tiberius, too. Hollywood aside the period of direct Roman rule of Judea was, in general, quite calm. That period lasted from 6 to 39 AD. The Jews petitioned Augustus to remove Archelaus as king and become a Roman prefecture in 6. Augustus agreed. There were some small scale riots when the Romans moved in but these were suppressed by local forces without calling in the legions so they can hardly have been a big deal. Josephus recounts the first 20 years of Roman rule in a single paragraph. He then picks on Pilate a bit for a couple of things but the biggest must be the diversion of temple treasure to fund a new aqueduct for the city. You can do a lot to priests but don't fuck with the money they have stolen from the people. Josephus belonged to a priestly family.

in 39AD Judea was transferred to Herod Agrippa I who remained king until his death in 44. Depending on which version of the story one wants to believe ole jebus was either 10-12 years old in 6 AD or, if you go by "Luke" little more than a twinkling in Yahweh's eye. However, all gospel sources agree that he was dead by the time Pilate was recalled in 36 AD. So who was he "fighting" against? Josephus lists every troublemaker who was righteously killed by the Romans without mentioning him.

So Rabbi Batshit is making up his own history and trying to re-write it to shoehorn another jewish "freedom fighter" into the record. In the process he will manage to piss off pretty much everyone who cares.

Seems to be an Hebrew/ Judean pass-time.

I wonder: would that be on his own initiative? Looking for personal glory? Mixed up with an unhealthy but all too common dose of fundamentalism? Or is he sponsored and stage-whispered to? A.k.a. bought and paid for.
Probably both.

That does explain the madness, doesn't it?
Anything else?
