Funnily enough you need microbes for alcoholic beverages .

Yup, yeasts to turns sugar to alcohol and therefore VEGEMITE . I kid you not;Vegemite is made from yeast extract,a bi product of beer making.

Vegemite only LOOKS like axel grease and can only be eaten if it inflicted on you as an infant with your teething rusks. I've seen large adult Americans burst into tears trying too eat Vegemite on toast. Some people have made the mistake of thinking Vegemite is a laxative ,because of its appearance. Neither does it kill crab lice.

I love Vegimite! I wanted to try it a while back and the lady that sold it to me told me how to enjoy it. She said to get some toast and liberally butter it, then lightly spell my initials with vegimite and eat. I followed her instructions and acquired a taste for that black muck. It is great on bagels, and of course, Australian Toaster Biscuits, a treat I can no longer find.

I prefer Marmite to Vegemite. It is milder and lets the butter taste on the toast come through more clearly.

We call them 'muffins'. Look for "English Muffins" :They are NOT cakes, nor what the Americans call 'biscuits' as they are leavened with yeast,not baking powder.


PS try mixing a little Vegemite into your mashed potatoes.

Mashed potatoes huh? I'll have to try that. I've mixed Marmite in with soups and even added it to marinades (I can't find Vegimite most times) I bet it would be good in mashed 'taters.

Oh.Never heard of 'em. (here a 'biscuit' is a cookie)

Perhaps they are crumpets? They have a lot of tiny holes and are made with a LOT of fat (not butter)


PS I had a girlfriend who had a secret ingredient in her spaghetti bolognaise; Vegemite.It was a bit vile.

They were like english muffins with smaller holes and much fluffier. For some reason they spoiled quickly so you had to be careful when purchasing them. I imagine that is why the product was pulled. I liked the product. I didn't think it had anything to do with Australia. I think it is humorous when a culture is whored out to manufacture interest in a product, but maybe I just have a twisted sense of humor.

They were 'bonzer' with vegimite on them! I learned that "Australian" word from Monterey Jack, a character from Chip 'n Dale's rescue rangers.

Don't know why they're ("Australian" toaster biscuits) not on the market any more - I loved 'em. Yeah, they did spoil fast - though they never seemed to be around long enough to spoil at my house. IIRC, they were quite a bit more expensive than English muffins, perhaps they didn't sell well enough.

"Bonzer" is indeed Aussie slang,(like saying 'awesome'or 'fully sick' today) and still widely used by people over 80 in the remote outback..
