Less conservative/religious bias.
Total separation of church and state and abolishment of tax exemptions from churches
And also needs to improve and provide healthcare and education for everyone equally.

That's great, but America's economic system just does not allow for some of these.
How do you propose that you solve them?
Slowly, but surely the government should start leaning more towards the left?

Our stupidity could almost be forgiveable if we weren't so goddamn proud of it and we didn't see it as a virtue. I have never heard of anyone being so proud to be anti-intellectual as an American.

As far as being controlled by the right wing, I believe a better statement would be to say we are being stifled by it. They would much rather hold the political process hostage than actually allow the left to accomplish anything.

I'm american, you're pretty spot on about america and yeah our education is bad. But I did bad only because my parents fucked me over and I had to do everything myself but I went to a school and finished on my own.

This is what you are up against.

He's telling stupid people that stupid is good. I'm sure they love that message.

I've been to the US several times, have dozens of relatives, and always get treated like royalty. I also think parts of the US are extremely beautiful. Much is very ugly indeed. Eg along highways, tract highways, slums.

I have never wanted to live in America, and no longer have the desire to even visit. My observation is that the US political system is the most corrupt in the developed world. I am appalled by American imperialism, jimgoism and the power of the lunar religious right.

Mostly, I will not visit again because is my perception that the rule of law is being slowly dismantled in the US since the national nervous breakdown after 9/11. I'll be happy to provide a list.

Are Americans stupid? Of course not ,but many seem to be naive, ignorant, complacent and smug, just like people in affluent countries generally.

I think it all stems from our education system. We, as a society, are valuing our intelligence less and less.

Big business having their hand in political affairs by way of hefty donation surely doesn't help us out any, either.

If we found the cure to cancer, we'd probably hide it from the public until the scientists found a way to make it a monthly pill, that way its not a one time profit.
"I get angry when believers say that the entire unimaginable hugeness of the universe was made entirely for the human race, and atheists by contrast say that humanity is this infinitesmal eyeblink in the vastness of time and space, and then religious believers accuse atheists of being arrogant."

Not so sure there is such a simple answer to such a complex social problem. Nor am I convinced that the the argument about societal values is correct.. The US and Australian education systems are just dandy if you happen to be middle class or middle class by aspiration and do not need to rely on the public education system.

Australia DOES have some excellent public schools. However, they tend to be in middle class areas.Parents tend to be very involved, contributing a lot of time AND MONEY to the schools.

Coincidentally, last night I was watching a programme on race and intelligence. I won't go near THAT argument. However, I will mention one claim made by the makers of the programme: That family values and attitude towads education are THE most important factor in how well a child does at school.More important than the school itself, the education system or even intellect.

Counter intuitively perhaps, a person of modest intellect can complete most undergraduate courses at least. (including law and medicine)

Yeah when we have a presidential candidate who claims that higher education is a bad thing and doesn't get rightly criticized for it in the media, I think we're fucked.

It's easy to cherry-pick the top five European countries and compare them to the USA. It's apples and oranges, though; the entities the USA is most comparable to are the European Union, Russian Federation, People's Republic of China, and India. Our population is over 300 million and one of the most diverse in the world. A country like Finland (bascially 5 million white progressives) would more fairly be compared to a state like Vermont, just as Greece would more fairly be compared to a state like Alabama. Getting this country to move in one direction is like herding cats, and just when you think you've got us figured out we'll go the other way (Baby Boomers retiring, Gen X taking over). We have several distinct regions with different needs and different outlooks, and nobody can juggle them so everyone is happy; but we have a strong central government with a winner-take-all election system, so one group can basically control the whole country if they get the presidency and a majority of congress. This seems tailor-made for increasing polarization over time. Under the circumstances, I can't say I'm ashamed of how we manage.

We should have had a parliament.
