If the driver happens to be poor, then the car is probably cheap. If the driver is driver is rich, then the car is most likely a luxury item. If the driver is a motor-fanatic, then the car is likely to be a classic, usually a gas-guzzler. If the driver is environmentally conscious, then the car is most likely eco-friendly. If the driver is a soccer-mom, the car is an SUV. See, a lot of judgments made about the car based on the driver.

Similarly, if people practicing a particular religion justify their violent actions on basis of religion, then the religion is most likely hateful and violent as well.

Ofcourse we consider the peaceful people as well. We take into account how many mutually contradictory and irrational worldviews a religion can support. If a religion is used to justify both love and hate, both violence and peace, then that religion is a mass of contradictions and lies that no rational person would choose to follow.

I side with Zakir on this, in a limited way. You can't judge an entire group by the actions of a few. Most theists I know are ignorant, but don't know about or condone the actions of the violent few. Then again, I live in quite a liberal area. Others elsewhere may deserve a violent reputaton.

The offending criminals should certainly be punished, and religion should never be considered justification for a crime, but this is borderline stereotyping.

Are there religious people who are non-violent? Sure. But the issue is that religion can be used as an excuse for any behavior. Are there evil secular people? Sure, but at least when dealing within a secular mindset we can at least start the conversation with reality. When actions are done for religious reasons, there is literally no way to have a dialogue about it. Their mindset is so delusional that they can justify anything they want to themselves and they have made themselves immune from rational discussion and societal standards at the same time.

This is also the same reason why any religious figure in a position of power is an incredibly dangerous thing.
