Oh sure, and she knows it's the truth. There are just so many factors to overcome, upbringing, social impact etc. to and she just doesn't have the personality to do it

I wanted to say alot of people have no interest in even entertaining the beliefs that god doesnt exist. I wouldnt dare try say anything to my mum. I would be jackie chan'd out of the house before i could say the 'st in atheist. Meanwhile i can have a good debate with my dad no hurt feelings. Its expecialy hard when they treat you like your opinion doesnt matter.

To the OP:

There are just some people you can't talk about atheism/religion to. It is frustrating but in the end its best to just leave those people alone because it is more trouble than its worth. My parents are conservative Christians and while I still talk with my dad about it I have very recently decided to not discuss it with my mom. We always end up fighting and it is both of our faults that we fight.

As far as faith defending his wife's beliefs if he loves her, its not straining their marriage, its not destroying her life, etc then why the FUCK should he be concerned with it?

I am really baffled by people who get so pissed that someone believes in any form of deity. Don't get me wrong I would still discuss it with those who did. In the end though.... the difference between being an atheist or a deist/agnostic is virtually undetectable.... so.... fuck it?

There was nothing behind it except an urge to argue about bullshit.

Hard to feel insulted by someone who just wants attention.

What exactly do you mean doesn't have the personality to do it?
"There ought to be a term that would designate those who actually follow the teachings of Jesus, since the word 'Christian' has been largely divorced from those teachings, and so polluted by fundamentalists that it has come to connote their polar opposite: intolerance, vindictive hatred, and bigotry." -- Philip Stater, Huffington Post

Well, for starters she's not one to go against her upbringing. Her family is fairly religious in their beliefs, just not in their practices, and there is an aspect of rebellion to not believing what the rest of your family does. She's just not one to go against the grain like that.

Also, she's not really one to step outside of her comfort zone. The belief that god is watching over her brings her comfort even though she knows that she doesn't really have a good reason to believe so. She's not one to give up that comfort in the pursuit of the truth, regardless of what she actually would conclude the truth was, so she doesn't really think about it out of fear that she might convice herself that what she's been raised as, Catholicism, isn't true.

The fear is what I don't understand most of all. I don't see coming to the conclusion that god isn't real as something to be fearful of. It makes me feel a hell of a lot better to know that some jackass experimentalist isn't going to 'judge my soul' and send me to burn for eternity.

But I guess that fear of hell is more what probably makes people not willing to use their brain.

Its probably quite upsetting to even think about leaving behind something they have trusted 100% for years.
