Hypertonic solutions are effective for treating a variety of sinus and nasal conditions, including allergic rhinitis, ageing rhinitis, atrophic rhinitis, cough and sinusitis. Hypertonic solutions have also been able to alleviate the nasal congestion, headaches and frontal pain and pressure associated with sinusitis. Hypertonic saline has been shown to reduce the use of medications such as antibiotics and nasal sprays in patients with sinusitis, to improve mucociliary clearance, mucus flow, and may reduce inflammation. It has also been shown to reduce sinus-related quality-of-life (QOL) scores.

Kichi, there is a reason alternative medicine is called alternative medicine. If it were as safe and effective as real medicine, that is what it would be called. Do yourself a favor, watch what salt does to a snail, You want to know how a hypertonic solution works in your nose, I'll tell you but first I want you to do a little experiment. Wash your hands with soap and water, do a good job please. Now take a little salt and make a paste with just a tiny bit of water. Now take the paste and rub it into your hands (wash them with the salt solution). Do this over a bowl so you can see the dark water coming off your hands. That is exfoliated skin being removed by salt, not exactly what you want going on in your nasal passages is it? Now how does a hypertonic nasal spray work? Remember how I told you hypertonic saline removes water from blood cells? In the video you saw how salt removes water and kills snails didn't you? When you suffer from congestion it isn't only a blockage of mucus (if it was, a plain water spray could remove most) but it is also an inflammation of the mucus membranes in your nose. Basically, you are turning your mucus membranes into snails and removing water which makes them more open (artificially) so you can breath easier. If you really want to breath by hurting the mucus membranes in your nose, go right ahead but I would think you'd rather have the facts before you first.

Yes dear I am aware of this....

I am under medical advice to do this to assist with reducing my Corticosteroid use from 1mg / day to 800µg/day. I use this say once a week to once a month. Rebound is such a bitch!! Big Grin

To be honest with you .... I have a hard time taking 500mg of paracetamol unless it is ABSOLUTELY necessary and see SOME of the "alternative therapies" only as an adjunct to mainstream medicine (the rest are genuinely bunk). Nothing relaxes me better than a hot bath with some Patchouli oil in it Sandalwood works well too Big Grin

If your using them because of nasal surgery, then this probably was recommended but only for short term use and not continuous use, if you are taking Corticosteroids for Cystic fibrosis then maybe it was medically recommended but again I doubt it would be advised for long term use. Look Kichi, you are arguing with someone in the medical field. I am not pulling facts out of my ass. Did you even watch the video of salt being put on a snail? Bottom line is a hypertonic saline solution is not safe to put in your nose.

I've always loved the cartoon below because it's even pithier than James Randi.

You know...thinking about it Phil. Here in Western Australia your = my mucus membranes are so assaulted by limestone dust, silica dust and native pasture grasses pollen and seed that I am thinking that your = my mucus membranes are fucked anyway.

Yes I am very aware of what you are saying...it just seems to me that you are stating that my doctor hasn't got a clue. And NO.... the practice is not for long term use but the corticosteroids will be thanks to acquired asthma and all the fun that entails.

? C'mon Kichi, I honestly would have thought better of you. Are you seriously saying that it is ok because they are bad anyway? Do you realize how easy it is to get to your bloodstream through any of the mucus membranes in your body? Tell you what, next time you get a small cut, pour salt on it since the skin is already broken.

Do that any way Phil...it's called cooking (with iodised salt). And yeah I live in a wonderful naturally polluted environment. Shit happens mate. I do find that IF one has a cut then some Betadine cream is not bad in helping clean the wound.
My dear Phil...I am saying that my doctor/ medical practitioner has recommended that I use a 20% Hyper-tonic solution to assist in clearing my nasal sinuses at monthly intervals minimum. As it stands I do use the product infrequently ....as you have stated that over use is detrimental.

I would have thought better of you my dear...that you would have given me SOME credit for independent thought.

Calling bullshit. There is not a licensed medical doctor in the world that would do that. And if there is, they should lose their license without a moments hesitation.
