The answer is in the first five words of your quoted comment.
You are currently experiencing a lucky and very brief window of awareness, sandwiched in between two periods of timeless and utter nothingness. So why not make the most of it, and stop wasting your life away trying to convince other people that there is something else? The reality is obvious.

Was debunking it really necessary in order to satisfy a few fruitcakes who have a clear inability to think critically?

No, Phil. Still, the fact that they still rail on when fucking NASA debunked it amazes me.

One of my ex's wife is a 2012 moron. I'm surprised she can tie her shoelaces.

I don't have "end of the world" conversations with anyone.

I make "end of the world" jokes in passing. It's worth nothing more than a chuckle and an eyeroll.

Wonder how they deal with the recent calculation accounting for the absent leap years on the Mayan calendar. Apparently the world should have ended last July. Did we miss it?

Didn't R.E.M. sing a song about it? And didn't they feel fine about it?

Our calendar ends on a certain day every year yet "the world", true bastard that it is, never has the decency to off itself in accordance with our wishes. You know there's something to the notion of our own selfishness and fear of death driving "end of the world" claims. The end is always in the claimants lifetime, it's as if they truly hope that everyone clocks out the same time as them. If they don't get to continue the party no one else should either. Better that we all die in a fire than someone outlive me, eh?
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

I am now.
At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist.  This revelation tends to make most people in the universe who have it react in one of two ways - with relief or with despair.  Only Skagra responded to it by thinking, 'Wait a second.  That means there's a situation vacant.'

I generally don't trust people who wish for the end of the world. Often times these people are doing bad things and are hoping to avoid the soon to arrive consequences of these bad things. Some people jack their credit cards up with the (mental) excuse that they don't have to worry about repayment. Others have extra marital affairs (both hetero and homosexual) thinking they will ascend into heaven (for those who believe once saved always saved) or just explode before anyone finds out. There are other bad habits - from doing drugs to just generally treating other's like assholes - that those with a get out of jail free/doomsday irresponsible attitude can have.

Doomsday has the tendency to put the fuck in the fucktard.
I have studied the Bible and the theology behind Christianity for many years. I have been to many churches. I have walked the depth and the breadth of the religion and, as a result of this, I have a lot of bullshit to scrape off the bottom of my shoes. ~Ziploc Surprise

Then there are those - mercifully rare - individuals who have been known to endanger or even kill their loved ones, including children, to 'save' them from some sort of imagined terrible judgement or whatever.
