Excellent quote about atheism
|
Technically, only the first two lines are a quote about atheism, but great image all the same.
Theists either don't know or don't care that our atheism tells them nothing about what we do believe in and what values we hold dear.
Richard Coughlan, despite the fact that I don't always agree with him, makes a good point in this video:

I like the bit about humanity working together.
I'll agree that the first part is the only true part. I know enough people who, as a church group, go to places like Katrina, disaster areas after they are hit regularly build for habitat for humanity and organize all different sorts of donation drives for people in the community. I don't think Atheists are the only ones that want a better world which what I'm reading from that quote.

Not what it's saying at all. It's just saying 'I'm an atheist and I want the world to be better.'
Even if the open windows of science at first make us shiver after the cozy indoor warmth of traditional humanizing myths, in the end the fresh air brings vigor, and the great spaces have a splendor of their own - Bertrand Russell

I'm an atheist and I really don't care about the world except in the academic sense. 'As an atheist' that's fine too; there are no 'shoulds' or 'musts' in atheism. I could change the first line to, "I'm a Plumber," the second line to, "I do believe in technical college." Then the whole second part would be about teaching children the merit of trade skills and finding better jobs then cashier or janitor by getting skills in welding, automotive repair, etc. It's not a great quote about anything, it's generic. The point of the quote is to show that atheists do not believe in God but they still believe in furthering humanity/helping others. There is a lot of negative stigma surrounding atheism in America especially so its trying to show that being an atheist doesn't make you an "evil bastard", not to say I am an objective morality person or anything just making the point.
