RE: Hello
The core of atheism is a lack of belief in god. Not only is this the core, it is everything that atheism is, there is nothing else. Your assessment is the product of an us vs them strawman cultivated by religiously minded individuals. It's easier to deal with any given criticism that atheists might make of theism by attempts at group character assassination than it is to handle them directly. By easier, I mean it would seem to be otherwise impossible.

I'd like to see belief in god completely dissappear, but this isn't because I'm an atheist, nor does it have much to do with evolution of rational thought (or reason, or evolution). Nor would I "remove" religion. That's something people will have to handle themselves, individually. These sorts of statements are actually very carefully worded to make atheism sound about ten times more sinister than it is. Whats so scary about "I do not believe"?
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

RE: Hello
mazeroni,

Welcome to the forums!

I can relate to you and your experience of atheism as something like a knee-jerk reaction to religion. I was confirmed Catholic last year, and then deconverted.

How are you both Catholic and agnostic?
God is a personification of ourselves, what we wish to be, and that which we do not understand.

I shouldn't have anything there but it was required to join. I dislike 'labels.' Like in the political party system, I won't be part of the silliness and chaos that ensues every day.

I was raised Catholic and I think that presenting myself that way lets other people understand why I may take certain points of view. I say agnostic because I 100% disagree with religion. I don't disagree with the fundamental teachings of the Bible and I don't believe it is possible to either prove or disprove the existences of a 'god.' I don't have a great explanation for what I am but I'll present it like this.

In college one of my best friends who helped me achieve a lot more then I would have on my own was Reform Jewish. She was raised to believe that holding higher titles and being successful is important, as is high self worth, kindness, become a doctor, lawyer, professor, run the media (haha.) She was an amazingly hard working person, extremely open minded, non judgmental, constantly happy and her belief structure made her that way. Basically in my lifetime I've seen a lot of people of different faiths who are everything I've said above because of their religion. Yes, they are the minority most of the time but I see the potential held within religion if not taken to far.

I'm trying to see things from the other side of the coin. I've been 'out of' religion for almost 5 years and I think it's unreasonable not to understand every possible point of view.
