Keyword, "contributed". Mutations haven't lost any ground here. Pathogens are an environmental pressure. Some people read too much into this "we're descended from viruses" or "natural selection does not account for but viruses might" (which seems to be the route you've taken), but what in this abstract suggests that to you?

"Contributed" is a key word, because it suggests a natural mechanism that would assist mutation. If true this would solve one of the primary dilemmas of evolution. That is this: the inordinate and improbable number of happy accidents required to create a new species.
