Objections to the April Fools Day prank.

True, he never said it directly; I should have put "it's our site" meaning "our" as in the mods. Other mods have used this. Of the top of my head, in this very thread, there's this:

"Sisters, you know only the north; I have traveled in the south lands. There are churches there, believe me, that cut their children too, as the people of Bolvangar did--not in the same way, but just as horribly. They cut their sexual organs, yes, both boys and girls; they cut them with knives so that they shan't feel. That is what the Church does, and every church is the same: control, destroy, obliterate every good feeling. So if a war comes, and the Church is on one side of it, we must be on the other, no matter what strange allies we find ourselves bound to."

Where does that say "it's our site"?

So, those of you who are angry or think that what we did is wrong should forgive us because our intentions were good, at least. We didn't have any malice intention behind this prank. It did get a little blown out after it was over, but we didn't want any of this to happen. Also, we have never done this before and never plan to do it again either. This was the one and only time that we did such a thing, and it was for fun, on April Fool's day.

Another one for the Hall of Shame I guess...

And that's where everything went wrong...
That's all it takes. I wouldn't mind if mods admitted when they messed up once in a while. Now can somebody apologize for taking the jokes too personally?

AA is making a good point about the pre-execution of the "April Fool's" prank. The entire point of such pranks is that they actually are contained to that one day.

Indeed, but the prank would not have worked without preparation.

Let's not pretend that set up for April Fool's pranks never happen and that, when they do, the common reaction is to reject it has an April Fool's joke, given that the preparation occurred in advance of the culmination. The prank did take place on that day. The prank was the site wide sock puppet entertainment. That did not take place until April 1.

Mmmm, ok. It was a bit less innocent than that makes it sound, because those puppets were already on site, interacting with people who, in many instances considered them real enough. To me, that is more than planning: It is execution.

Sorry, I disagree. We were interacting on site, as to do otherwise would have been suspicious come April Fool's Day. The prank itself was site-wide sock puppetry to amuse and entertain the community. That was not done until April Fool's Day. Had the prank been to merely interact with members, that would have been execution, but it was not. Furthermore, we banned one of our sock puppets because it had got too far with members and we had not intended to utilize them more than minimally before April 1.

The word "innocent" makes it sound like we were guilty of something and I cannot agree with that. People repeatedly said that day that it was the best time they had every had on the forums. The tune only changed after the fact. For my part of it, the tune changed for a very specific reason that had nothing to do with the prank and would have likely eventually happened anyway, as the situation had wrongly not been checked by myself. Not handling that long ago, I do regret. The prank itself, I do not.

How could the tune have changed before the fact, or indeed, during it? People thought that the puppets were real.

. . . and they thought they were amusing and fun. That did not change until after the fact. The puppets were not meant to target people. They were meant to do exactly what they did, which was engage the forum members by entertaining them. That worked. There was absolutely no hoopla until after the entire thing was said and done. Again, much of that was unrelated to the socks themselves. My belief is that, for a large part of it, the unrelated hoopla gave rise to the sock puppet hoopla.
