RE: Thunderf00t vs Eric Hovind @ The Reason Rally
April 6, 2012 at 2:14 am
That was insane. If you watch closely enough to study Eric's nonverbal communications, you can see that when Thunderf00t is talking, his face muscles are tensed, he has a smirk on his face. If you watched it with the sound off, it would appear that Eric was agreeing with everything Thunderf00t is saying at many moments. This is because he's amusing himself in his own mind while Thunderf00t is talking. He's not actually listening to what Tf is saying, because the whole point of the "interview" is not to gain understanding, but to maliciously trick Tf for the purposes making propaganda.
This is confirmed by Thunderf00t's expressions of exasperated disbelief. Anyone in that situation would've felt the same way, including Eric, had the roles been reversed.
That's something, I think we can all figure out within minutes of watching it, and have figured out. This whole write up is just me being a nerd, and analyzing it.
That being said, when Eric is talking, he does a lot of arm flailing. That's something people do when they feel desperate, but not necessarily vulnerable. He also swallows hard after he asks the question, which looks at first glance like nerves or fear, but it's actually a sign that whatever has just come out of his mouth is dishonest, and he knows it. People tend to swallow before they speak when they're nervous, and after if they're being deceptive. The striking movement, Eric does with his hand while he's talking is a sign of inner aggression.
This is a great video to watch again with the sound off, or watch first with the sound off, if you haven't already seen it. If you do, and study just the nonverbal cues, it's amusing. At least, it was to me.

My favourite bit was when Hovind said Thunderf00t had abandoned atheism because he said "I know there is no God".

Eric Hovind is his son, yes. Same last name, same stupid arguments, hence I don't mind equating the two.

To be honest Thunderf00t dug himself into a very deep philosobabble hole, making himself look as big a dick as Eric Hovind in the process.
Never start philosobabbling because you start saying insane shit like how can you prove you or the universe exists and how do you know the tooth fairy isn't real, etc etc. This turns people off and makes them think you're a dick.
Sorry Thunderf00t, but up until 28.30, which is the point in the video I'm making this post, you've lost.

I disagree. For once, Thunderf00t was actually coherent on philosophical matters. Hovind just didn't get it, and he kept repeating the same bloody questions again and again and again. You just can't argue with people like that.

I agree that Hovind didn't get it, but I never expected anything else. What I was disappointed in was TF turning to the philosobabble nonsense that turns many people off. Most people don't have the time or inclination to endlessly bang their gums on about how you can't prove reality is real, and other such pointless crap.

I find it hard to believe he stood there and participated in that bullshit for more than 5 minutes, but he did. What a waste of time!

He was doing so to avoid giving an absolute answer to knowledge. Hovind clearly had an answer he wanted to hear, to make some sort of retarded philosophical comment, but Thunderf00t simply wasn't playing Erics game.

I did find the whole "we assume we exist" part confusing. Even solipsists will acknowledge our own existence since we think therefore we are.
