At least until we can travel it easily and mine various planets and moons. Most of the available monies should, in my opinion, be spent on research into propulsion systems. Until we can visit other solar systems, we are just running around in our own backyard like children, turning over logs to find salamanders.

On the other hand, We should let we find in our solar system inform just how much investment we put into our propulsion system reseach right now.

Ion Thrusters are possible and Solar Sails are already in use on the small scale.

America is in debt. Its that simple. Or maybe they realized that playing God is not in the best interest of the Human race.

I don't see it as a waste of time at all. The objects in our solar system are the closest alien worlds for a very very very long while. There's a multitude of moons out there with intriguing characteristics and anatomies. We could learn a hell of a lot from exploring the solar system.

Like FNM said, we have to start somewhere.

what's worse, playing god, or acting like there really is one?

debt? the feds print money whenever they need it. the current investment is .5% of the national budget that goes to nasa. this is hardly a big deal to even double to contribution. going into space is not about finding if god exists, that would be a waste of resources, it's about explaining the universe and our minor role in it - getting some more exposure of the big bang, may just explain more about how the universe was created. it's about discovery and learning.

Is it? Why don't they cut that bloated defense budget?

What exactly does exploring space have to do with playing god?
Even if the open windows of science at first make us shiver after the cozy indoor warmth of traditional humanizing myths, in the end the fresh air brings vigor, and the great spaces have a splendor of their own - Bertrand Russell
