Restoring sight for the Blind

Restoring sight for the Blind
Isn't it amazing what science can do?

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-17936699

Quote:A British man who has been totally blind for many years has had part of his vision restored after surgery to fit a pioneering eye implant.

The device, which was fitted behind the retina, has enabled Chris James to perceive light and even some shapes.

I'd say in the next 50 years we'll be able to heal the blind completely.

Suck on that jebus.

Indeed. I hope we will see much more of this in the future. Another step to immortality.

I'd take it as a compliment. Shows that scientists can do more amazing shit than their frickin' god.

While this is certainly fascinating and interesting, it's hardly news. This work has been a long time coming, starting with experiments in which patients were fitted with an array of tactile stimulators, which themselves were hooked up to cameras or photoelectric arrays. With some training, these patients developed a "visual" experience corresponding to the tactile stimulation which was ordered by the visual stimulus.

RE: Restoring sight for the Blind
Anyone here ever see Kimjongilia, documentary that is done via smuggled footage from an optic surgeon [can't remember the technical term for an eye surgeon] who is a charity-doctor; basically goes into North Korea and treats people with cataracts for free for charity and humanitarian aid? It's remarkable because they are showing how basically every minute of every day of every person's life in N. Korea is spent in ceaseless devotion to Kim Jong Il [now likely the same for his son, Kim Jung Un].

The moment that sent a horrible wave of cold down my spine was how when he was performing the surgeries, he would remove the cataract-coated lens and insert an artificial one, basically 'healing the blind' in a sense. Simple procedure, often not necessary in developed nations since nutrient deficiencies aren't nearly so common as they are in the third world, but in any case, once done with their procedure, none of them thank the surgeon...

Instead they fall to their knees before a portrait of Kim Jong Il and start screeching praises and baying gratitude towards their "Loving Father." Not a single hint of gratitude is ever directed at the doctor. And they all do this. A long line of these people, maybe a hundred...all with the exact. Same. Reaction.

This will be the case when we cure total blindness. The faithful will prostrate themselves in church and thank god for this 'miracle.'

And no credit whatsoever shall come from the faithful to the doctors and scientists who developed this cure. Ultimately, they will attribute all credit to their mythical deity.

And in both cases, it is the fear of being punished by the tyrant if credit is not given to them.
