The Un-Christian America

Of course it mattered. The US was trying to distance itself from those European Christian nations which had been fighting with the Barbary pirates for centuries who not only raided ships but made coastal raids to capture xtian slaves for the North African slave trade.

"As the government of the United States of America is not in any sense founded on the Christian Religion," Barbary Treaty.

Yep, and you might also bring up the fact that not one person in the house or senate at the time voted against it. It was a unanimous vote signed into law by President John Adams without veto.

I think to a lot of them there is no difference between the two. Being Christian means subscribing to all things American and vice versa.

RE: The Un-Christian America
There have been periods up and down throughout America's history where the right wing actually did the right thing and valued the wall Jefferson talked about. Jerry Falwell successfully since the 60s butt fucked the wall and marketed a theocracy where non-Christians were mere pets as best. Mitt is now having to walk the same tightrope JFK did in "no religious test". My irony meter is going to explode.
