It's just an old custom/superstition from when they thought your soul left your body when you sneezed. Probably came from some pagan beliefs.

It does not mean anything now, especially when most people have dropped God from the saying.

If it bothers you a lot, then you are probably a hard person to get along with anyway.

Pre Christian I think,but the actual word has probably changed over millennia.Eg Isis, Set, Venus.Sol, Jupiter, I think, Hindus scream "Hai Raam! " (generic). Have no idea about Muslims.
