Well, it is generally due to fears of losing social acceptance that people go through these things.
Even though many would deny connections, I think it's specific to only a few people on earth. Why does this not occur to the people in Bosnia?
Or, say, Daghestan?
But it seems to occur to the people in Pakistan or Afghanistan to kill their daughters in the name of "honour", or should I say, fear of losing social acceptance.
I have heard from a friend that lives in the southeastern parts of our country that this is quite the tradition over there. Alims and imams generally stop tribes and families from feuding and end vendettas, but do not seem to get involved when this is in question.
It's not that it happens when a married person commits adultery with someone else. I've heard that some guy killed his daughter for going to the cinema, or requesting a song from the radio.
My approach to this is as such:
Social acceptance is one thing, but in some societies, girls are simply seen as a liability. They are unable to provide heavy labour, on which the family economy might depend on, and must be fed by the family. The only compensation that this family will receive for giving birth to a daughter is the wedding dowry, which is not a common thing anymore in the western parts of our country, but is still there in the eastern parts of the country. A girl whose name has been blemished is a girl that is unable to marry. No one would take her. So, she becomes an extra liability.
Therefore, her parents, and more generally, a family council generally make up their minds whether to eliminate her or not. It's generally up to a younger member of the family to do the job. They do this generally by shooting the unfortunate soul. In the older days, this was done by drowning.
This is a very primitive way of thinking, it's based on a simple survival tactic, eliminating a member of the community that is generally unable to contribute(and nibbles on the already scarce resources of the community), which has become institutionalized and fitted into a social and cultural frame. It has become so integrated into the culture of some, that they continue to do this even if they live abroads, where they do not have to face the scorn of others.
The same cannot be seen in the more richer members of those communities, it's only prevailant amongst the more poorer sections.
