'One of the reasons' is making the unfounded assumption that there are rational reasons for religious belief,rather than rationalisations.
My view is that religious belief is almost always due to an accident of birth. "The reason" is simply that children are inculcated with their parents' personal superstitions and world view before the age of reason.They rarely question, then or later. If they did atheists would be the majority world wide. If a non believer dares question dogma, he is presented with a form of mental masturbation called 'apologetics' and/or its pretentious brother, 'theology'. God loves those who believe and those who do not and the same goes for me, you have no choice in this matter. That puts the matter of total free will to rest.

I think one of the reasons people believe in god is the fear of death and the promise of another one. There's also indoctrination at a young age when they don't know any better. And fear of eternal torture if you don't. This is nothing more than child abuse.
