I was watching yesterday on youtube a BBC series hosted by the delightful Dr Alice Roberts. This series was entitled the Origins of Us; the series outlined how our evolution from creatures similar to chimpanzees has shaped us in every facet of us. So I do thoroughly recommend everybody to watch it if they have not already done so.
In one of the episodes Dr Roberts discusses how around 2 million years ago, human ancestors started hunting animals along with foraging for fruits and tubers. That lifestyle change resulted in a division of labour between males and females, which resulted in the males hunting for animals and the females foraging for fruits and tubers. Even in species such as the diet was equally disturbed between meat and plant matter.
Dr Roberts argues very well that the institution of marriage or men and women pairing up started with the exchange between men and women for food in hominid bands. The logic goes that women needed meat from the men who hunted it and men needed the fruits and tubers that the women gathered. So it made sense for men and women to pair together and raise offspring together.
