Ah, the benefits of living in a country with roughly 5.7 million people.. Our elections are straigtforward. There are about 10 candidates (from different parties, or no party at all) in the first round and if none of these get 50% or more of the votes, the two most popular go on to the second round. Every citizen that is eligible to vote has one vote per round.
We had our presidental election this spring and it was really interesting. For the first time we had a serious candidate from the Green Party, who was also openly gay. His opponent won, but not with the landslide as the experts first predicted.
I think the system is quite fair and works well, but I cannot say how it would fair in a bigger country with a larger population..
