I've always wanted to go LARPing, it looks like a hilarious excuse to smack some geeks with rubber swords.

Seriously, why the fuck don't they do it in the UK.

I'm a member of the Society for Creative Anachronism, an organization that involves itself in what many would call "LARP." In reality, we engage in a martial sport where we suit up in steel armor and beat the crap out of each other with weapons made of rattan. We often have large field melees and "wars" between the different kingdoms in the SCA.

Fighting is a hell of a lot of fun; I encourage you to give it a shot sometime. As Annik said, rattan weapons do not tickle. We don't pull our blows at all, so there is always the possibility of injury.

I've seen some SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism) battles with very real looking chain and plate mail with very real looking swords, metal, not rattan. They were great! They took turns defending this castle-like structure in Avery Park in Corvallis Oregon. We always tried to find a place to hide so we could watch the battle up close, but they always found us and told us we would get hurt if an arrow or spear (PVC foam tipped) found it way to our heads.

Interesting, but I'm not so certain that was a regulation SCA fight. Metal weapons are prohibited in SCA combat, so it's possible they were just doing stuff on their own time with their SCA armor.

If anyone's interested, I can pull out my SCA armor and post a picture for you guys to see what it looks like.

Yeah, you're probably right, but it was cool watching them wack each other.

You should post up your pics, that would be cool.
