Personally, I think you're terrified of being wrong. You have such a strong desire for an afterlife it scares you to even think that you're probably wrong, and that there is no such thing.

I guess it's down to what you'd rather go with.
A comforting lie?
Or the painful truth?

There is no such thing as a comforting lie, lies always lead to trouble, whether the lie is know or not. I agree there are truths that are painful, truths like hell as a punishment for not believing.
God loves those who believe and those who do not and the same goes for me, you have no choice in this matter. That puts the matter of total free will to rest.

Hell is a truth? News to me. Undecided
Of course there is such a thing as a comforting lie. You're so sure you're going to heaven. It's comforting, but it's a good bet that it's a complete lie.
Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence - Carl Sagan

Mankind's intelligence walks hand in hand with it's stupidity.

Being an atheist says nothing about your overall intelligence, it just means you don't believe in god. Atheists can be as bright as any scientist and as stupid as any creationist.

You never really know just how stupid someone is, until you've argued with them.

At least it's out in the open now, on the record for all to see. Hell is punishment for not believing. No mention of raping, killing, fornicating and all the rest - just not believing the least credible people's opinions about the most improbable, even impossible things. Thanks for clearing that up.
At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist.  This revelation tends to make most people in the universe who have it react in one of two ways - with relief or with despair.  Only Skagra responded to it by thinking, 'Wait a second.  That means there's a situation vacant.'

choir in the yard
in the house next door
where a grandma brought
some songs from the shore
six foot girl gonna
sweat when she dig
stand close to the fire
when they light the pig

standing in her chinos shirt pulled off clean
got a tattooed tit, say number 13

How many people do you feel the need to threaten on a daily basis GC, honest question? On average, of course.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

[dis-]Gosh darn it. GC shouldn't have to be threatening us to do right. We all know in our heart of hearts that he is right and, really, don't we all truly want to please the lord? Come on then fellows, lets throw down the yoke of atheism and stop making GC's work so damned hard for him. He only wants for us what's best for everyone. Thank you Jesus! Thank you GC! [/-ingenuous]
