They have to finger point, because this country is made up of a majority of Christians. To not scapegoat the atheists would be tantamount to admitting that god could be upset with the people that claim to speak in his name, so they have to convince themselves that all our problems are a result of their unwillingness to purge the atheists and the liberal Christians that advocate secularism.
