Gee, what did I do in my life that I didn't grow up afraid of everyone and everything? Most of my friends are guys. I probably should assume they only want to pork me and be done and have stuck around for 5 to 10+ years on that hope (sometimes 20+). Wait - some of us did bone and they still stuck around. Could it be...men are actually capable of friendship and feelings? And empathy?

No, even that isn't true.

To get into this incident, I have to explain a little about my father. He was raised the son of Italian Immigrants (educated guess is they left Italy when Mussolini started gaining power) and he spent the majority of his childhood living in a ghetto on the west side of Chicago that was predominantly black. This was back in the 50's and 60's, right in the heat of the civil rights movement and his neighbors had little love for white people. He had to learn to fight and get himself fit simply because if he didn't, he would get hurt or killed. He often had to run for his life because neighbors had trained their dogs to specifically attack white people.

Now keep that in mind while I explain their views on privilege: if a group has advantage overall, that's privilege and if a group has advantage overall but isn't advantaged in specific areas (like my dad was, growing up in a black neighborhood), well, they find ways to explain it away. Their philosophy is that men always have privilege, women never do. I explained my dad's situation growing up and used that to point out that even if one group is advantaged overall, that doesn't mean that group is always advantaged. All I had to listen to from them was a wall of text explaining away his concerns and sympathizing with the people who attacked him on a daily basis. Some even compared me to the KKK because I'm concerned with a privileged white guy in the face of unprivileged black people.

Their rule seems to be, you can discriminate to your heart's content as long as you discriminate against the right group. Discriminate against men, white people, able bodied people, straight people or Americans, you're ok. If you discriminate against women, black or hispanic people, the handicapped or transsexuals, you're a bigot. And the verbal gymnastics they go through to justify themselves is infuriating.

Well, I figured that, but the scary thing is, his sarcasm was pretty damn close to the truth. It's pure hipster activism: they stand up for anyone who's not mainstream; everyone else is an evil oppressor.

So, would a more accurate statement be that discrimination is bad except when it's against groups that've earned it, i.e. men and white people?

The more I learn about is movement the less it seems to be built upon actual principles, and the more it seems like an exclusionary club created to jerk each other off over how progressive they are.

(Would they find it sexist that I said "jerk each other off" and not "masturbate?")
