Crops for overwintering/late harvest

RE: Crops for overwintering/late harvest
Well, what kind of temps are you expecting? So long as you keep them over 50 degrees during vegetative and between 70-85 when they blossom and go to fruit you don't have a problem. A very thin cover can raise the temp 10-15 degrees under the sun, you can do more with misters, IIRC we had a dip into the high teens a couple years ago and managed to keep the maters (in veg) at 57 degrees for about 3 days. The cold front broke long before they went to fruit and we harvested more tomatoes than I cared to weigh. I suppose what I'm suggesting is something frost tolerant to start the winter period followed by something that can be babied through a less vulnerable stage of development expecting the spring temps to carry you through when they arrive.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

30's would be an issue, containers maybe? Haul em in at night, leave em under a really cheap a-frame during the day?
(Also, if it's tomatoes, I wouldn't even seed them till feb. Brass can carry you though those temps easy until then - oh..hey..try some specialty stuff, like tatsoi and other asian greens maybe?)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tatsoi
"It can be grown to harvestable size in 45–50 days, and can withstand temperatures down to –10°C (15°F). Tatsoi can be harvested even from under the snow."
(the pictured examples are pathetic btw, they can be downright gorgeous, with 30 or 40 miniature stalks rising from a center crown)

Ain't got the room to haul them inside - that's why I was looking to see what could handle the first of winter and probably stop growing for the two months beginning. What I do want to do is seed the last bed with carrots and such to overwinter and then have them in the spring.

Meh, you're stuck with brass then. Any of them should survive the temps you're expecting. You can literally knock the damned ice off the things in the am and they'll be fine. You may get tip burn, but that's all.

That's what I figured - I wasn't expecting much else. I can buy the others as long as I'm not spending $3-4 a bag on lettuce 2-3 week. Fuck that noise.
