Suffice to say that; yes a lunatic fringe group (global) has wrought this unrest and that the majority of those who adhere to the islamic religion are for the most part happy to just have their beliefs and keep them personal. The one thing that escapes EVERYONE is that we live in a GLOBAL community and there is nothing wrong with "Western Nations" injecting capital into these oil rich countries. In Australia we have ASIAN nations (China in particular) injecting capital into our country by way of agriculture and mining.

The question remains that ..."are these islamist extremist views SO fucking backward that they are STILL locked into the 7th century world view?" And if so then the "islamic world" has a fucking LOT of catching up to do and it can START by educating the "other" 50% (read females) of it's population!

The Muslim world is dominated by a honor and shame culture, which leads to things like this and honor killings among other things. When other people either attack or make fun of say their god Allah or the Prophet Muhammad, these people feel that the honor is Islam has been tarnished and needs to be redeemed.

Mind you there used to be a time when Christians reacted in quite a similar way, when they thought their religion was being attacked. While they still do get deeply offended, they have come to the conclusion that reacting in the same those Muslims have done recently is not terribly productive.
