I think this kinda started in the cold war. We formed a healthy fear of communism during that time. Once we won the cold war, though, that fear transformed. Instead of wanting to avoid the negative aspects to communism, we feared taking any steps that could be interpreted as being socialist. So we pretty much let big companies do whatever the fuck they want and we're terrified that if we say anything against it, we're commies. The reality is, economic policy isn't a black/white, communist/capitalist thing. There's a lot of grey in there where you can place reasonable regulations and restrictions on business owners and it will help the economy and even promote competition.
The sad truth is, we're so afraid of communism, that we're just about taking on one of the primary features of a communist government: big business and the government becoming the same thing. In communism, the government takes over business but what we're seeing now is business taking over government. Either way, when they're both the same entity, things get bad for most of us.
