Interesting. Does anyone think that the Koreans who announced this story believe it to be true? I don't think they do. So why would they say it?
I think the answer is this-
In a society built around the idea of a strong individual who is going to lead the others to some goal, there will be a need to not only exaggerate the abilities of that individual, such as saying he is so cleaver, kind, powerful, etc, but there is also a need for the others to show they are subservient, in that they have put their full trust in the leader.
What could be a better show of faith in the leader than saying you 'know' he did something impossible, is descended from gods etc. These sort of stories about great leaders, are not just people being silly, but are a requirement of those sort of societies.
