You're missing the point. The cat is such a good option for the meme precisely because it is not cute. Cuteness is all about innocent and naive characteristics intended to evoke protective and nurturing instincts. The cat, on the other hand, has a look of universal misanthropy and and smug superiority - a look that seasoned actors would take years of practice to perfect. Using something cute in its place would dilute the "fuck off" message that the cat manages to convey with a simple look.

It's cute because he looks so grumpy, you just want to pinch his cheeks. And pugs are cute, too. Their little bug eyes look silly on their faces and I like it when they run with their tongues out. I am not "pretending" they are cute. This is what's called a difference of opinion. Like Rayaan said, cute is subjective.

I have to admit, that one was good. But still, that "grumpy cat" only worked because of the other one. Still not a species of cat I would adopt.
