Cool, then you can anticipate his next argument: that he has bones in both arms extending from his elbows to his shoulders and that I don't now how to spell 'humor'.

He'd make an interesting subject for my PHD dissertation. I was originally going to write my thesis on "Beating a dead horse: When does a joke become too overused?" on which I've collected a lot of data from here.

But hey, we have to have our guns, right?!

Never mind a properly funded police force, affordable health care, increased education funding -- we have to have cheap easy guns!

Let's accept the NRA's idea -- a totalitarian state to keep our guns is the answer.
"When are we going to keep crazy people and people who aren't in good standing from getting guns, period?"....Yes! Exactly!.....but the anti-gun idealouges are distracting from the real issue and are expending too much energy and effort on more gun control legislation and not enough time and effort on recognizing the mental health issues and other environmental factors that would motivate someone to pick up a weapon and begin killing people, (whether it be with a gun or with fertilizer mixed with racing fuel).....you ignorant loudmouthed naive pompouass leftist fringe nuts aren't even addressing the core issue! This isn't a question about guns and more gun control legislation, this is an issue about the heart and mind of someone who could be motivated to commit murder!

Uhm........ how, exactly, do you propose we prevent people with mental health issues from getting guns? There are a lot of people with severe mental health problems who have gone undiagnosed for years simply because they don't have adequate health care. How can we expand health care enough to cover these people without treading into 'socialist' territory?

Anyway, speaking as one of those "anti-gun idealouges" I'm more than willing to talk about mental health issues in the gun control debate. I'm also willing to talk about the easy availability of firearms. I want to look at the whole picture, not just little bits and pieces of it, and while I don't necessariarly support strict gun control laws, I'm also not strictly against them either.

So far, the NRA has done a pretty masterful job of preventing meaningful legislation from passing no matter how many of these psychos go on a rampage. All they have to do is get congress to stall long enough for the public to forget and the bill is dropped. The only problem is that it's getting hard to forget the shootings when they're just about back-to-back.

"Don't give crazy a gun" - 45/50 states already have a law on the books to this effect. Easier access to healthcare would allow more thorough enforcement.

I think the government should invest in actual psych screenings for people buying guns. Plus, the person will get a free psych screening... Actually, it's probably better if they tack a $50 fee to it.

Then there is the issue of the illegal gun trade, which by-passes all of these safeties. To put it simply: This isn't a simple issue that can be solved by just doing one thing or another. We need to change as a culture before any of these changes would work.

Registration, license marks etched onto every square millimeter of the gun, etc can go a long way towards establishing uniqueness among it.

Uniqueness means one can track who buys what, such that when a gun is used in any crime and is not legally owned, the preceding legal owners can be held accountable for an illegal sale.

True, someone might sand blast off the markings.

This is not a perfect solution, but one of many that you employ, like better healthcare and education, a focus on faster response times for police, teaching people to hide and get out of line of sight of a gun man, etc,.

There will be no perfect solution. Even if guns were to be banned and collected, someone would still attain one.

But that is no excuse to let people who have no business owning guns have an easy route to obtain them.

The route must be very, very arduous to get a gun even for a legal buyer to screen out the mentally ill, the violently unstable and those who have a known proclivity towards violence.

We also should find a way to enforce gun owners lock up their guns from any non-owner.

I might remind people that the Sandy Hook shooter used his mother's guns, which were unsecured.

There must be a way to encourage, enforce and blame people for their unsafe acts that allow criminals to obtain weapons.

Firearms carry serial numbers as a matter of manufacture firstly, that is also used to track them (some manufacturers fire a round and database the rifling marks). State registration and licensing databases can and do exist (and do not infringe upon anyone's right to bear arms in any way what-so-ever). Chances are, whatever we're considering (shy of banning possession) is already written into law and/or ubiquitous to the ownership of a firearm.

This is pretty much how all Federal legislation gets done. The congressman are so interested with getting re-elected, that they don't even bother to draft their own bills they present. They let the lobbyists do that for them burying BS so deep only they know about it and the politicians then wonder why America has done down the crapper.

Tell your politicians to be more concerned about doing their job than being selfish pricks.
But if we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, His Son, purifies us from all sin.
