Gaddafi shouted this into the cameras at a pressconference whilest rebel forces were closing in onto Tripolis.
And now, one may almoust say that he might have been right.
Shortly after he was found in hole, raped, beaten, shot in the head and his body paraded like piece of meat (oh how civilised)

The magrebinian part of his armed forces grabbed as mayn arms as possible and disapeared into the Sahel.
And shortly after that, all hell broke lose in the regions bordering the Sahel.
The Sahel, is the strip of tsahara desert reaching from Somalia to Marroco, it is this desert which is the border between black and christian southern Africa and arab and muslim northern Africa.
And in the time since Gaddafis demise, sectarian violoence has resurged in Nigeria, Al Shabab in Somalia which were intitaly forced to retreat by Kenian and Etheopian forces regained momentum, the Dafur conflic flared up again and all accros Algeria, Lybia and Mauretania islamist extremists have been conducting acts of terror and kidnappings.
Resurgin violence is also feared in bordering instable nations such as Niger, Tschad, Burkina Faso and Guinea.
A few months ago, a entire Boing was found in the middle of Algeria`s region of the Sahel, gutted of all passenger seats it was later revealed that it had started from Venezuela and that drug cartels are now using the anarchy in the region to smuggle drugs into Europe together with islamist groups, which although they are stricktly against drugs, can use the money.
And after a investigative report by the Mali journalist Malick Aliou Maiga, it turned out that those wonderfull people from Saudi Arabia, Quatar, Oman and other gulf nations have been ariving in the Sahel with mauntains of cash.
And that because of that, a young man in the Sahel can earn more and get better food and other living nececeties fighting as a islamist than with one of the nations armed forces.

And of course recently, the war in Mali, which was fuled by weopons of Gaddafis unatended arms depo and was definatly a resulting war of Gaddafis demise.

So, Afghanistan use to be the hub for islamism, then Somalia and now a region less than 2000 km away from European soil.

And it is hard to get any information on this on the news since only the french seem to be interested in the news from their former colonies.

Of course he was right, not that he was any champion of civilization himself. The fall of the authoritarian regimes of Egypt and Libya has been the greatest boon to Al Queda since the Soviet Union vacated Afghanistan, and it would be surpassed when Syria falls and El Quada can use it as a base to generate even more grass level arab/Islamic support by pricking directly at Israel.
