The Nasty Get Nastier

RE: The Nasty Get Nastier
You get a generous tip from me when the service was exemplary, I don't give just anybody a tip.

It's kind of a mixed blessing that the story's kinda exploded over the internet. I have a feeling there's going to be some angry people out there who will down her address, the church she's a pastor at, her day job (if she has one), her family and who knows how much other information on her. Nowadays, hell hath no fury like getting the internet pissed off at you.

It varies by state, but US Federal law allows employers to pay tipped employees as little as $2.13 per hour (provided that they make enough in tips to bring them up to the Federal minimum of $7.25). Some states do exactly that.

Yeah, it sucks.

Of note, while federal law mandates that workers who do not make enough in tips be paid according to minimum wage, workers who fall under that category are often summarily fired.

In short, it is get tipped or get fired.

Fortunately, there are a few states where tipped workers must be paid at least the Federal minimum wage before tips. Interestingly, all of them are in the west: Oregon, Washington, California, Nevada, and Alaska. Montana as well, provided your employer has gross sales of more than $110K.

I'm happy to live in a state where tipped workers must be paid almost $2 over the Federal minimum wage before tips ($9.19, same as non-tipped employees). No, I won't be using that as an excuse to not tip.

As far as I understand it a tip here is called "Trinkgeld" and is payed under completly different circumstances.

"Trinkgeld" translates to "Drinking money" and was usualy the money given to young employees and apprentecis who wouldnt earn much during the early stage of their working life.

The "Drinking money" which was given to them after comercial service had (as the name suggests) the purpose of giving them money to spend on alcohol in a pub.

Of course all I know about the American tip is what I learned from a conversation in the movie "Resevoir Dogs"

That's terrible!

Hang on, are we to understand that, that pastor just got that waitress fired because of what she wrote on the bill??

Pastor is dead meat walking...oh dear... or at least she will be guaranteed shitty service from many other establishments, maybe?

The fact that it identified her AND there was backlash to let the pastor know that what she did wasn't as sanctimonious as she thought. She's not ashamed of what she did, she's just ashamed she got called out about it and that people agree with the person who called her out. She would be less inclined to act out if no one agreed with the waitress, I'd wager.

Probably not from Applebee's. I can't remember - was this in the South? Plenty of places down here at least where she would be applauded. Jesus first, you know.

America is fucked up in many ways.
