Faces Of Our Ancestors

Faces Of Our Ancestors
http://news.discovery.com/human/evolutio...-faces.htm

Quote:To put a human face on our ancestors, scientists from the Senckenberg Research Institute used sophisticated methods to form 27 model heads based on tiny bone fragments, teeth and skulls collected from across the globe. The heads are on display for the first time together at the Senckenberg Natural History Museum in Frankfurt, Germany.

The thing about these ancestors is that they're the ugliest sons of bitches you ever did see. Is a good thing we evolved better lookingness.

Luckily for us our ancestors found the opposite sex of their species attractive. Big Grin

How do we know they did? It could just be that was the best they were going get. And if that was the standard of attractiveness then surely we would be stuck with mugs like that now? There would no need to improve on the features of the face.

Beauty is supposed to be in the eye of the beholder. If our ancestors could time travel and saw us they might think we're hideous. Big Grin

Then why did they evolve to become better lookin if they thought they were already good lookin enough for their own tastes?

Our appearance is just a by-product of our selfish genes building more efficient survival machines. As it happened over millions of years our ancestors didn't notice there was anything going on. Just as well, too, otherwise there would have been a generation of hominid mothers going "EEEK!!!!!! My baby doesn't have any fur." Big Grin

You don't know about sexual selection then?

The ape men with the slightly less ugly face would have had a slightly greater chance of attracting a mate.
