Interesting read.
Isn't there an aphorism in German along the lines of: "This wouldn't have happened under the Fuerher?" Russians have more of that in spades. Slave to the Patriarchy no more

Thing is, germany was totaly destroyed and demolished, it`s right for a future existance put to question by the rest of the world and it had to take responsibility for the worst crimes commited in human history. Therefor a positive remark about this era is impossible to make and usualy only done by stupid provokateurs. Russia on the other hand won the war, and generaly speaking - when looking back at famous historic figures - most of them commited or where involved in horrendous crimes but are still seen as great figures of human history due to their final victories. Such as Peter the Great, Fredrick the Great, Queen Victoria and others. I've heard that, a couple years back, there was a "greatest Russian" poll coming out, and that he got #2 in the poll, and people thought it was rigged... because they thought he should have been #1.
Of course, given that his fight with Hitler may very well have been the turning point that led to Hitler's downfall, that could very well explain a lot. After all, Winston Churchill is almost universally admired in the Western World primarily for being PM of Britain during WW2, and, from what I've been able to gather, he didn't really do much else as a PM that could justify the hype. That said, Hitler did have the utter lack of sense to try and invade a country that resisted Napoleon primarily by being fucking huge.

not only that.
The entire operation barberossa was a complet bodged pile of shit, with soldiers sent into nowhere on zig zag without supplies. (not that I reget hitler losing) Napoleon could at least keep his shit together and reached moscow - he would have won if it wasnt torched. With hind sight knowledge of how the winter would turn out, Napoleon probably lost his last sliver of a chance to achieve a draw in the campaign when he failed to annihilate Kutusov at battle of Borodino. Once he lost his chance to destroy Kutusov's army, the best Napoleon can do would be to immediately retreat to winter quarters in Poland to save his army, and effectively throwing the campaign in the proces. Better to abort a campaign with partial forces than lose all.
