Me too. That high pitched squeal from very young children especially girls,makes me want to shove a stick through my eardrums. However I'm pretty sure it's a survival tool. I think just about all young mammals exhibit similar behaviour when distressed or startled.

To simply dismiss the behaviour of people who hit children as "just cultural" is not very helpful--so is female circumcision,and stoning women for adultery. .

The use violence against children is about power and control. Not to mention an indicator stupidity,laziness, incompetence and lack of self control and lack of imagination in the person who hits the child.

My position;it is NOT OK to hit a child,ever. No child 'deserves' to be hit. A child is a person from the moment of birth,not a possession. Most people who hit kids stop as soon as the child gets big enough to hit them back--IF it's OK to hit kids it's also OK to hit or even yell at annoying,ignorant and stupid adults.Such as most of the apologists we get here. It isn't OK.Why only last week I was almost decked in the post office for telling some dickhead to "fuck off". (I kid you not)

I understand that this is an emotional issue for most people. I also realise I'm expressing a personal opinion,not a universal truth or moral law. I'm perfectly willing to agree to differ.
