Even if the open windows of science at first make us shiver after the cozy indoor warmth of traditional humanizing myths, in the end the fresh air brings vigor, and the great spaces have a splendor of their own - Bertrand Russell

Women have equal rights. Except in Islam.

It also should be noted that many of the restrictions of women (no learning, extreme dress, ownership, no religious participation) had been cast aside (ok, they cannot be Rabbis - yet!), and Christianity seems to have done so in areas ourside of the church as well. Islam, however, is very rigid in it's understanding and unwilling to bend, and it will take an internal revolution to change. They are progressing, but in the wrong direction, when it comes to women.

So if I were to go to a Synagogue today, in 2013, I'd be free to sit where I like? That's cool, because I know years ago women weren't worthy of sitting with the menfolk. Nice to see it's moved forward since I was a child. :D

You are jewish?
fuck.... that probably sounded weird coming from a german. Anyway, I think a privatly funded temple of any religion can do whatever it wants. But a taxexcempt or even publicly funded temple should not have gender sepration in place. There is no such thing as "reform Islam", and while there is a reform Judaism, some have female Rabbis. If you want more orthodoxy, then women do not sit with men during prayer time. But they will not be beaten for doing so, like they would in Islam, or be in fear of being raped for not having their head uncovered. As I said before, Islam got a lot of it from Judaism and Christianity, and then went way off the deep end with their passions. While the other two have dropped some of the mysogynist points of view, they have not dropped them all, which is unfortunate. Put a woman in a sack, give her 50% voting rights, beat her if she goes out of line. And it gets worse...much worse. I recommend the book "Infidel" to see how bad it really gets.

And, of course, they have little to no actual power.

Ah, freeeeeedom! Viva la revolucion!
Now if we could make all of the "Abrahamic" faiths collapse, the women could take over - after all, the guys had their shot at it!

Even within Abrahamic faiths, the amount of misogyny varies from one culture to the next. Here, in the US, we have denominations like Methodists and Baptists where women can be pastors and everything but we also have denominations like Catholicism and Mormonism that pretty much tell the women they need to be barefoot and pregnant 90% of the time. It even varies within other cultures. Look at the ancient greeks and you'll see quite a bit of variety there, too. The Spartans were far from egalitarian.

There's definitely a lot of variation within faiths. I have many muslim friends who live with as much freedom as anyone else I know. I work with one girl whose family are a bit mental and call her too "Westernised" and one of her brothers went as far as throwing acid over her car or some shit, but she still lives her life her own way. She bought her own house when she was 18 and moved out, and she's marrying the man she chose for herself sometime this year. Another I've known since school wears a Hijab but is always getting shit from her parents because they don't want her to wear one.(March 16, 2013 at 4:27 pm)NoraBrimstone Wrote: That's not limited to Islam. Infidel by Ayaan Hirsi Ali is a great read. She was born in Somalia, and moved from place to place until she left Islam, and ended up being put in a bazooka-proof house to be kept alive for her crime. Or google her on YouTube - she tells her story there as well.
