The problem, as I see it, is that the show has no overall goal or plot line (maybe the big-ass comic books do, haven't read them). It's just about day-to-day survival. It's supposedly a zombie show, but the zombies are just window dressing at this point. As they can't think, they don't make an interesting foe.
They need to introduce an end game, like a search for a cure. I was very surprised when they made it to the CDC early on and no long-term plot line came out of it. They could still do it with rumor of some private facility or something.
When you think about it, a zombie apocalypse isn't that interesting. Find a secure place (they already have), gather lots of weapons and food, fix/expand your fences, start growing crops. Once you get over the initial shock, zombies are just another predator, and not a particularly dangerous one at that. They're slow and knives go right through their skulls.
