Samoa moves to the left.

Samoans are now driving on the left hand side of the road instead of the right.

The official reason is so Samoans can buy cheaper cars from Australia and New Zealand.

Since the change there have been no serious accidents. The president of Samoa has declared this proves Samoans have high IQ's. (or relatively few cars)

The Samoan change is in marked contrast to the disaster (1500 dead 5000 injured)) when a change from left to right was tried in N Ireland in 1962. No one has ever been able to work out what went wrong.The plan was perfectly rational: All cars with even number plates were to change on the Monday.The rest ,the following week.

On topic: A study at the TU in Delft has shown that the UK way of driving, being driving on the left hand side and giving the right of way to the right, or driving on the right and giving the left the right of way, are the most efficient methods of keeping traffic flowing. The EU mainland method of right hand driving and right of way to the right actually hinders the traffic flow more. This study has been repeated and tested with simulations and field testing in the UK, Holland, Sweden and Thailand.

I don't know if the study is available online somewhere, I have it in a Dutch science magazine and I don't have a scanner.

Yes I know about Samoa switching to the left hand drive, the first country to implement moving over since 73, I've been discussing that on another forum as well. I made a similar joke there about phasing the switch in by letting the lorries drive on the left first, and the rest to follow in a few months time.
