Because they thought the second half of the saga was more interesting, and would make for a better cinematic experience.

To be honest, I think they were right. They're still better films than Episodes 1, 2 and 3.

Those crazy Mel Brooks movies: Airplane, spaceballs, blazing saddles...
...

The Zuckerman brothers and JJ Abrams are going to be pissed at that attribution for Airplain.

This. Whatever they spent on the CGI and other effects was worth it. It would've been nice if they'd had enough money left over for a team of competent writers, but I guess we can't always get what we want.
"Well, evolution is a theory. It is also a fact. And facts and theories are different things, not rungs in a hierarchy of increasing certainty. Facts are the world's data. Theories are structures of ideas that explain and interpret facts. Facts don't go away when scientists debate rival theories to explain them. Einstein's theory of gravitation replaced Newton's in this century, but apples didn't suspend themselves in midair, pending the outcome. And humans evolved from ape- like ancestors whether they did so by Darwin's proposed mechanism or by some other yet to be discovered."

Too bad money like that (and today's technology) couldn't have been pumped into Ferngully, because that was a kick-ass movie. Tim Curry was inspired voice casting for a villain, especially as he's the only person who could sing about pollution and make it sound oddly sexy.

Not in order, just five great movies:

Crimson Tide - Stakes can't get much higher, great performances by Hackman and Washington, Aragorn in a supporting role. Unfortunately the DVD contains a couple deleted scenes which were deleted for a reason.

Rocky - the popularity of the movie and awfulness of the sequels have detracted from the status of the original, but it was a really great movie. Stallone's monologue to Adrian the night before the fight is a classic scene.

Bringing Up Baby - Old Grant/Hepburn screwball comedy.

Animal House - Leibowitz...Fawn Leibowitz. Need I say more?

That's 2 dramas and 2 comedies, guess I should throw in an action:

Return of the King - Jackson makes up for The Two Towers.

Tiberius? THought there was a rule against screwing with people's posts...

Fourth Indiana Jones film: sucked. No redeeming features whatsoever.

Temple of Doom: very good. A couple phrases from it are still used in the V household:

- The right. Your other right. The one on the right....We...are going...to die!

- No time for love, Dr. Jones

The quality of SF movies is at times inverse to any SFX and even production values where most expensive prop in The Man from Earth is a pickup truck.
