Still feel trapped

Still feel trapped
I still feel trapped in the morals of christianity. It's only been a few weeks since I finally realized the truth, but how do I rid myself of these values that have been branded in me? I still don't feel free. I don't want to believe anymore at all. I don't believe but it's like "god" is still there nagging in the back if my head

RE: Still feel trapped
Which morals and values? Most of them are still quite useful, I find.
"Well, evolution is a theory. It is also a fact. And facts and theories are different things, not rungs in a hierarchy of increasing certainty. Facts are the world's data. Theories are structures of ideas that explain and interpret facts. Facts don't go away when scientists debate rival theories to explain them. Einstein's theory of gravitation replaced Newton's in this century, but apples didn't suspend themselves in midair, pending the outcome. And humans evolved from ape- like ancestors whether they did so by Darwin's proposed mechanism or by some other yet to be discovered."

Yes... those pesky "do not kill", "do not steal", etc moral rules...

Read your country's civil and penal codes. When you're done, you'll have no recollection of religion. Wink

Idk.. It's a weird feeling. I guess because it's like trying to forget to walk. Cause I've been doing it my whole life you know?

Give it time to hone your morals. In time you will free yourself a bit at the time.

I wouldn't worry too much. It takes time to become completely free from your religion. It is a gradual process. Or at least that is what I think it is like. Personally, I wouldn't actually know. Religion never got it's filthy mitts on me in the first place. Tongue

One of the perks of being an ex-Christian atheist is keeping whatever out of Christianity you think is worth keeping and discarding the rest.

RE: Still feel trapped
I know for me and friends of mine who left sects of Christianity, one of the hardest things to get past is the fear. There's this weird cognitive dissonance that happens when you're just sitting there, thinking about what it means to live a life without god when suddenly, "That was so blasphemous, I better pray for forgiveness!" pops into your head. It takes a while to get past that, and sadly the religious guilt never goes away for many things. Every now and then you'll get these little bouts of fear that you're going to hell. Just keep in mind that you came to this conclusion after a lot of meaningful thought...probably a lot of unanswered prayer, too. Remind yourself that, at the end of the day, there is no good reason to believe that any of that nonsense is true, and sin doesn't exist.

You'll be able to shake these feelings with confidence after you've replaced the Christian guilt with your own thoughts on those matters. It just takes some time.

I think you should realise that you never got your morals from Christianity in the first place. No Christian does. If you did, you would promote slavery, rape, genocide etc... Many christians do not understand how morals came to be and so think atheists have non, this is not true. You don't need a God or a religion to tell you not to harm other people or kill or rape. Society and your own experiences teach you morals

'You can have all the faith you want in spirits, and the afterlife, and heaven and hell, but when it comes to this world, don't be an idiot. Cause you can tell me you put your faith in God to put you through the day, but when it comes time to cross the road, I know you look both ways.' - Dr House

“Young earth creationism is essentially the position that all of modern science, 90% of living scientists and 98% of living biologists, all major university biology departments, every major science journal, the American Academy of Sciences, and every major science organization in the world, are all wrong regarding the origins and development of life….but one particular tribe of uneducated, bronze aged, goat herders got it exactly right.” - Chuck Easttom

"If my good friend Doctor Gasparri speaks badly of my mother, he can expect to get punched.....You cannot provoke. You cannot insult the faith of others. You cannot make fun of the faith of others. There is a limit." - Pope Francis on freedom of speech
