RE: Unregulated guns are a catastrophe!

I dunno man, if I had a weapon like that I'd "defend" myself by "assaulting" the shit out of someone with bullets.
"Well, evolution is a theory. It is also a fact. And facts and theories are different things, not rungs in a hierarchy of increasing certainty. Facts are the world's data. Theories are structures of ideas that explain and interpret facts. Facts don't go away when scientists debate rival theories to explain them. Einstein's theory of gravitation replaced Newton's in this century, but apples didn't suspend themselves in midair, pending the outcome. And humans evolved from ape- like ancestors whether they did so by Darwin's proposed mechanism or by some other yet to be discovered."

They are not "assault weapons" as the term assault beckons an adjective to imply the use of the gun for offensive measures. Thus "defensive weapon" is the correct term as these weapons are being used for defense.
The technical origin of the term arose from the mobile warfare of WWII. It was found that for defending a position single shots were more effective but for assaulting (attacking) a position full auto fire was more effective. In WWII type warfare one could be defending in the morning and attacking in the afternoon. Carrying two different weapons was impractical. Thus a selective fire weapon was the solution and got the name.

I don't see why anybody needs a gun. What is the utility in it?
Maybe 200 years ago, but today I don't think it's congruent with our society.

The bad guys have guns and they do need guns to be bad guys.
When we have society free of violent crime you might have a point. We can discuss it again after violent crime is gone. Until then, disarming the victims is counter intuitive.

Yes, of course! Logically! The only way to stop gun violence is more guns! Why didn't I think of that? The NRA did! EVERYONE should have a gun to protect themselves, right? The bad guys got the guns. Give all the good guys guns! Hell, give the guns to your kids! They need protection from all the other kids with guns anyway!

It works for the police. That is why they have guns. The interest is in stopping crime whether the perp has a club, a knife or a gun, whether singly or in groups. Are you suggesting harsh language instead?

When parents let their kids have access to guns they are Darwin Award candidates. But when it comes to access it is the poisons under unlocked kitchen sinks that kills most kids around the house. Should not those be banned first? But as to small children killing people with guns the other murder epidemic against children is their own parents killing them.
I consider it most important to keep perspective. It one has a problem with the consequences such as dead children one should prioritize their interests to be in accordance with the causes of deaths for children. If you really care then put your efforts where there is potentially the greatest benefit.
Anything else indicates your objective is guns and the rest is just a good use of dead kids. Quite cynical if you ask me. Jaded even.

I have a '45 thompson that might best be considered an "assault weapon." It is so danged dangerous I can't use it anymore and keep ammo far away from it. The stupid thing's trigger is so hair light that it has a mind of it's own to fire. And it doesn't have a safety.
I keep it in my closet so that a burgler will shoot himself with it.

You're more likely to wound yourself with it - then a burglar is to ever be wounded by it. Speaking of burglars...."home invader" seems to be a pretty damned ballsy career choice. You really have to want that TV bad if you're willing to walk into a darkened home knowing that the guy inside is probably better armed than yourself.

National Child Mortality Data 2007 ages 0-19
The non-disease numbers. The second number is per 100,000
category Unintentional Injury 11,560 14.0
Motor Vehicle 6,683 8.1
Drowning 1,056 1.3
Fire/Burn 544 0.7
Poisoning 972 1.2
Suffocation/Strangulation 1,263 1.5
Firearm 138 0.2
category Homicide 3,345 4.1
Firearm 2,186 2.7
category Suicide 1,665 2.0
Firearm 683 0.8
Suffocation/Strangulation 739 0.9
Poisoning 133 0.2
Given the age group one presumes this does not include military service.
For accidents 138 is well down in the noise compared to 11,560.
If the issue is homicide then what we read about most often in the papers is drug related. Now if they can get illegal drugs there is really no point in dealing with guns which it is probably already illegal for them to own. If drugs can be smuggled in by the tens of tons so can guns.
In fact the only issue appears around suicide. When it comes to suicide, guns are a guy thing but I have no idea how to prevent suicide.

Take it to a gunsmith. The trigger should not be that way.

Is that not a risk an adult may willingly assume? For the record, one does not shoot to wound. One does not point a deadly weapon without the willingness to use it to kill. A disturbing number of gun owners do not understand the responsibility that comes with it.

A few decades ago the NRA found NRA stickers in the window were quite effective on their own.
Concealed carry states have all seen a significant reduction in street crimes like muggings after adoption.
