"Well, that's a complete waste of fucking time."
"Since you'll be on your knees, I would much prefer a blow job."
The list is endless depending on what prompted the useless gesture.

"I'll pray for you."

'God' has allowed you to continue to use the brain he gave you in order to discern that there is just not sufficient evidence or reasoned argument to justify belief that he exists. You are passing the test and will be rewarded in the afterlife. You'd believe if you just opened your heart" is a terrible argument for religion. It's basically saying, "If you bias yourself enough, you can convince yourself that this is true." If religion were true, people wouldn't need faith to believe it -- it would be supported by good evidence. First you say "I'll pray for you" is your way of saying "fuck of and die", and the next you say Muslims don't have a sense of subtlety?
The thing is that it's not really meant as an insult, it just comes across as insulting in certain contexts.

Was it Dawkins or Hitchens who remarkt that the best reply for this can only be "And I will think for you!" ??

I hear it very very rarely. It's been a few years at least.

You obviously don't understand the distinction of hating but doing it with grace and style. The distinction is best explained by Mrs. Betty Bowers, America's BEST Christian when she called out the uncouth Westboro Baptist Church. Enjoy her video: P.S. Anyone who doesn't understand why I'm only America's 3rd Best Christian, it's because I can't compete with Mrs. Betty Bowers. Pastor Deacon Fred is the 2nd Best Christian in America. P.P.S. GLORY! I have POE-ned yet another atheist. Glory and praise the sweet name of Jay-zus!

: True Christian is a Trademark of the Landover Baptist Church. I have no affiliation with this fine group of True Christians because I can't afford their tithing requirements but would like to be. Maybe someday the Lord will bless me with enough riches that I am able to. And for the lovers of Poe, here's your winking smiley:
Next to never. Though, after my first miscarriage my husband's grandmother told me she was going to light a candle for the baby. I have absolutely no idea what that means. She's Catholic. I don't understand it. She said she'd pray for us. She is his grandmother, so I accept it as her offer of sympathy and that's it. I don't hold it against her.

The people who did take the time to visit? With one exception, all atheists. Well that's crappy. I understand that prayer makes people feel like they have power when they are actually powerless. What I don't understand is why they use it as an excuse not to do something when they have every ability to do so. As one with visible mobility issues (spina bifida), I am a magnet for those types, and I know at least a few in my life have actually put their hands on me and prayed.
