Is climate change a matter of human rights?

http://sustainablecitiescollective.com/g...man-rights

Climate change is a major threat to the realization of human rights as others participating in Blog Action Day (2013 theme human rights) will also say. People living in poverty are feeling the effects soonest and most sharply as the map below showing the distribution of deaths due to climate change in 2000 clearly shows. It’s essential that human rights are on the agenda at all the key meetings aimed at tackling climate change if effective solutions are to be enacted.

Quote:Back in February we started talking with City of Melbourne about running an event to bring together people working toward a better food system. The main objectives were to discover existing and planned food enterprises and initiatives, explore ways all could support each other, and identify opportunities to work together – particularly with activities that could help City of Melbourne achieve the vision set out in its Food City food policy. The belief being that with shared knowledge, greater connection and collective action we can have greater impact with our efforts transforming our current food system to one that is sustainable, resilient and fair for all.

Quote:China smog emergency shuts city of 11 million people
Date: 22-Oct-13
Country: CHINA
Author: Adam Rose

http://planetark.org/wen/70118

Choking smog all but shut down one of northeastern China's largest cities on Monday, forcing schools to suspended classes, snarling traffic and closing the airport, in the country's first major air pollution crisis of the winter.

An index measuring PM2.5, or particulate matter with a diameter of 2.5 micrometers (PM2.5), reached a reading of 1,000 in some parts of Harbin, the gritty capital of northeastern Heilongjiang province and home to some 11 million people.

A level above 300 is considered hazardous, while the World Health Organisation recommends a daily level of no more than 20.

The smog not only forced all primary and middle schools to suspend classes, but shut the airport and some public bus routes, the official Xinhua news agency reported, blaming the emergency on the first day of the heating being turned on in the city for winter. Visibility was reportedly reduced to 10 meters.

The smog is expected to continue for the next 24 hours.

Air quality in Chinese cities is of increasing concern to China's stability-obsessed leadership because it plays into popular resentment over political privilege and rising inequality in the world's second-largest economy.

Not "veggie" related but putting a shout out there for

The Hunters' Calibre

Australia has a HUGE problem with introduced species decimating our native flora and fauna, hunters are a part of the controls in place to address these animals. Unfortunately, it seems that "greenies" would rather see our population poisoned from baiting programs in our water catchment areas that has currently lead to the sharp rise of feral animal numbers.

Where's the beef? Soaking in ammonium apparently..

American McDonalds feeds us pink goo.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dCqKl4Q3...ata_player

I love how this article is all like, but it doesn't hurt anybody!! We lost 650 jobs because we can't take all thedog food picks of the meat, soak it in ammonium, and feed it to the school kids anymore!!
aghast.

http://m.beefmagazine.com/blog/jamie-oli...onsumption

Quote: Oliver is taking credit for the change. In one of his consumer food demonstrations, he uses a live beef animal, primal cuts of a carcass, a can of spray paint, a clothes washer, and a locked cabinet of chemicals to demonstrate what he calls the “pink slime process.”

Despite the fact that a writer last week deemed the McDouble as one of the best economical and healthy foods, Oliver says the McDonald’s burger is “not fit for human consumption.”

When describing LFTB on his show,Oliver tells a grossed-out public, “Basically, we’re taking a product that would be sold in the cheapest way for dogs, and after this process, is being given to human beings.”

It’s been more than a year since the industry was “pink-slimed,” a term coined by ABC News anchor Diane Sawyer and British food blogger Jamie Oliver. The term, of course, was the sensational characterization of lean finely textured beef (LFTB). LFTB is a 100% beef product produced by a process developed by Beef Products Inc. (BPI) of Dakota Dunes, SD, which sparates fat from lean in beef trim. Until the sensational ABC News expose, LFTB was commonly used as an ingredient in school lunch programs and fast-food burgers. The fact is that billions of pounds of the product have been produced and consumed over the years without any reported problems.

The news report, and the resulting social media campaign, created such a hysteria that demand for LFTB dried up, and BPI was forced to close three of its four LFTB plants and lay off 650 employees. BPI then sued ABC News and others for defamation, and that case continues. But the nasty connotation in consumers' minds that beef is tainted with chemicals persists.

In fact, that notion is being perpetuated by Oliver’s most recent musings. His war against the fast-food industry has been largely aimed at McDonald’s, which announced earlier this year that the chain will revise its burger recipe to exclude LFTB.
If I were to create self aware beings knowing fully what they would do in their lifetimes, I sure wouldn't create a HELL for the majority of them to live in infinitely! That's not Love, that's sadistic. Therefore a truly loving god does not exist!

Quote:The sin is against an infinite being (God) unforgiven infinitely, therefore the punishment is infinite.

Dead wrong.  The actions of a finite being measured against an infinite one are infinitesimal and therefore merit infinitesimal punishment.

Quote:Some people deserve hell.

I say again:  No exceptions.  Punishment should be equal to the crime, not in excess of it.  As soon as the punishment is greater than the crime, the punisher is in the wrong.

The "war" on saturated fat is the biggest mistake in the history of nutrition.
As people have reduced their intake of animal fat and cholesterol, the incidence of many serious diseases has gone up. We are now in the midst of worldwide pandemics of obesity, metabolic syndrome and type II diabetes.

Studies conducted in the past few decades conclusively show that neither saturated fat nor dietary cholesterol cause harm in humans (1, 2, 3, 4). Scientists are now beginning to realize that the entire low-fat dogma was based on flawed studies that have since been thoroughly debunked.

WTF?
Walmart Holding Canned Food Drive For Its Own Underpaid Employees
BY SCOTT KEYES ON NOVEMBER 18, 2013

Full Article:- http://thinkprogress.org/economy/2013/11...ood-drive/

A Walmart in northeast Ohio is holding a holiday canned food drive — for its own underpaid employees. “Please Donate Food Items Here, so Associates in Need Can Enjoy Thanksgiving Dinner,” a sign reads in the employee lounge of a Canton-area Walmart.
Kory Lundberg, a Walmart spokesman, says the drive is a positive thing. “This is part of the company’s culture to rally around associates and take care of them when they face extreme hardships,” he said. Indeed, Lundberg is correct that it’s commendable to make an effort to help out those who are in need, especially during the holidays.
But the need for a food drive illustrates how difficult it is for Walmart workers to get by on its notoriously low pay. The company has long been plagued by charges that it doesn’t pay its employees a real living wage. In fact, Walmart’s President and CEO, Bill Simon, recently estimated that the majority of its one million associates make less than $25,000 per year, just above the federal poverty line of $23,550 for a family of four. When the Washington DC city council passed a living wage bill requiring Walmart to pay workers a minimum of $12.50 per hour, the chain threatened to shut down its new stores if Mayor Vincent Gray didn’t veto the bill. Gray vetoed the bill.

McDonald’s Advice To Underpaid Employees: Sell Your Christmas Presents For Cash
BY ADAM PECK ON NOVEMBER 19, 2013

Tis the season for holiday spirit: Yule logs, egg nog, festive lights and exchanging gifts with loved ones. If you work for McDonald’s, though, be sure to save those receipts.
McDonald’s McResource Line, a dedicated website run by the world’s largest fast-food chain to provide its 1.8 million employees with financial and health-related tips, offers a full page of advice for “Digging Out From Holiday Debt.” Among their helpful holiday tips: “Selling some of your unwanted possessions on eBay or Craigslist could bring in some quick cash.”
Elsewhere on the site, McDonald’s encourages its employees to break apart food when they eat meals, as “breaking food into pieces often results in eating less and still feeling full.” And if they are struggling to stock their shelves with food in the first place, the company offers assistance for workers applying for food stamps.
McDonald’s corporate officers have a history of offering questionable advice to their low-wage workers. Four months ago, the company partnered with Visa to distribute a sample “budget.” In it, the chain suggested that workers needn’t pay for such frivolous expenses like their heating bills, and factored in a monthly rent of $600. To workers living in New York City (home of 350+ stores) and other expensive metropolises, that number is almost comical.
