Yes, but that's not true is it? In the example she will be miserable if she finds out the truth. Either you are a git and just don't care about a person's welfare or you think it more important, morally, that someone know the truth than that she be spared great suffering. She's on her deathbed and you'd inform her that her husband played around and didn't love her. Someone who thinks that's the 'right' thing to do is, well, just plain incorrect about that (just as someone who thinks cruelty is a virtue is incorrect and needs rewiring).

Most everyone is at first miserable upon getting bad news. Know what, though? They get over it, and they become happy again. That is life.

You only invented the part up that she's on her death bed now

Are you ready for the fire? We are firemen. WE ARE FIREMEN! The heat doesn’t bother us. We live in the heat. We train in the heat. It tells us that we’re ready, we’re at home, we’re where we’re supposed to be. Flames don’t intimidate us. What do we do? We control the flame. We control them. We move the flames where we want to. And then we extinguish them.

Impersonation is treason.

How the hell do you know that? How on earth do you know what will make everyone on earth happy? I would be beyond PISSED if someone let me die without telling me that my sorry excuse of a husband cheated on me. I would want to redo my will for one.

But I'd like to turn this around...
Meet Joe, He's a standard guy, trying to make a living in a crazy world... One day, this other guy (Matt) tells him about yet another dude, let's call this dude, 'Dude'.... and Joe falls in love with Dude, because of all the wonderful things that Matt told him about Dude and he also told him that Dude loves Joe back.
At some point, other friends of Joe's tell him about Dude.... He really wants to meet Dude, but no one can get those two in touch with each other.

Now you are, dear reader, are fully aware that Dude was made up by Joe's friends, just to mess with him, or to get him to look forward to something, or whatever...

Is it ok to tell Joe that Dude doesn't exist, never has and never will?

What's your answer to the original question?

RE: Immoral atheists
Ok to re answer the question, If she was on her deathbed and I could accurately predict the future and read minds and know she would be unhappy and distressed until she dies if I told her that her husband was unfaithful then in that case no I would not tell her.

I guess I'm a good guy now.

It is a thought experiment. So I am stipulating that the discovery that her husband didn't exist/never loved her etc - will distress her enormously. It is conceivable. So, what would be the right thing to do?

I personally think if I had the power to read minds and tell the future and I was at the death bed of this woman then I wouldn't tell her about her husband cheating. It would be right so that she doesn't get upset before she dies.

Yup and your experiment just failed. Cos you made the wrong assumption that she would rather be happy than to know the truth. And as luck will have it, here's someone who'd rather be miserable than stupid.

The real question being: what's your point?
