I am pretty sure he was not deputized at all, nor was he even acting in the capacity of his local Neighborhood Watch. He was told not to follow but did anyway.
Maybe it wasn't murder, but certainly Zimmerman is responsible for Martin's death because he certainly instigated whatever confrontation actually happened by playing vigilante.

I think the prosecution dropped the ball the moment they charged him with Murder 2. I think they must have been hoping Zimmerman would plea down to Manslaughter, but the prosecution has been so weak, I don't think he's going to feel the need. I think he's going to get off with nothing but the personal shame he will be forced to confront for the rest of his life. Which is something, but I don't think it's enough.
Let's face it: the guy ruined his life the second he shot that kid, as well it should be. He's a rogue who allayed the 911 operator's advice, and in doing so, shot and killed a teenager who was just walking down the street.

I do think the choice to prosecute for murder was a political one in which pragmatism was set aside.
I think it's interesting to note, however, that those that speak of self-defense never take into account Treyvon Martin's right to it. If I see that some creepy guy is stalking me at night, do I not have the right to defend myself as I see necessary?
