Have you ever gone back?

RE: Have you ever gone back?
I went to The church (party bar) in London. Does that count? (It was great fun)

More seriously, nope I haven't gone back. I've wanted to just to see how crazy I was. It just feels like so much effort.
Any spelling mistakes are due to my godlessness!

I was a fundamentalist Christian for some years. Also, I was a neo-pagan, Buddhist, Roman Catholic, and several other silly things. I have been through and dismissed many religions on my way to being a complete non-theist. My family is still worshipping Cathol so I do get sucked into attending a mass now and again. It's beyond bizarre at this point. I believe it is more on the truly horrific end of the rational thought spectrum.

What's worse is they don't even give you a little shot of booze anymore. That's crap...

Not during that last visit, no, but years before, back when I was active, yes.

I've gone back to church a few times for my mother's sake when we visit her.

It's more retarded than ever. I'm from a small town so I wouldn't confront anyone there about the inconsistencies and absurdities of the religion. That would make it back to my parents and I don't want rumors running around that crappy little town talking about how my parent's kid grew up and turned into an evil atheist.
Everything I needed to know about life I learned on Dagobah.

I visited my town's cathedral when I needed the restroom. I think it's fitting that the first time I entered a church after my deconversion was to poop. Big Grin
When I was young, there was a god with infinite power protecting me. Is there anyone else who felt that way? And was sure about it? but the first time I fell in love, I was thrown down - or maybe I broke free - and I bade farewell to God and became human. Now I don't have God's protection, and I walk on the ground without wings, but I don't regret this hardship. I want to live as a person. -Arina Tanemura

I was a devout Catholic until I was in my late 20s. I then considered myself a non-denominational Christian, and in my mid-30s I dabbled in the Baha'i faith and very, very loosely considered myself to be Christian. I attempted to go back to the Catholic Church, but it was no use. It wasn't until recently that I realized I just couldn't believe anymore. I don't plan on returning to religion any time soon.

Thanks for evening the score for all the times theists have come onto here and dropped loads of crap everywhere.

Once in my mid twenties I went with my father to his church just as a friendly thing to do for/with him. I wasn't at all considering returning for myself. At the time I could believe in a lot of things but not that. Boring? Of course. Worse, I wasn't able to get through the whole thing without .. expressing myself.

After suffering through prayers and readings they got to discussing raising money to support missionaries. I asked if it was really necessary to make the whole world over in their image. Must everyone in the entire world wear a tie and carry a bible on Sundays? The head-guy asked someone in a pew what they would do if he discovered a snake in his path. That guy said he would watch it. So I guess they saw me as a snake and kept their eyes on me. Oh well, in my own mind I was on my best behavior and trying to do something for my father. I just couldn't quite keep the revulsion in check.

I went to a Catholic church to learn Latin. At the time I had short, spiky hair and spiked bracelets. Rock on.

RE: Have you ever gone back?
Nope.

Once I learned what constitutes evidence and logic, there was no turning back.

As soon as I started examining my previous theistic beliefs with the same level of critical thinking I used for other supernatural claims, they disappeared like a puff of smoke.

You'd believe if you just opened your heart" is a terrible argument for religion. It's basically saying, "If you bias yourself enough, you can convince yourself that this is true." If religion were true, people wouldn't need faith to believe it -- it would be supported by good evidence.
