Just Curious

RE: Just Curious
All of the above, really.

But I suppose the one thing which irks me the most about religiousity (not just the Christian franchises) is the concretised claim they make to have an unshakable grasp on ultimate truth. A claim which is based on...nothing.

I can't in all honesty say I hate Xtianity, or individual xtians for that matter, except inasmuch as it teaches people to be satisfied with the lowest common denominator in terms of critical thinking and seeking answers to even the simplest questions. However it's not unique in that. I have a particular distaste for smug, superior condescension, but again religion isn't necessary for that; it just seems to make it easier somehow.

I just find it irritating the way religion finds the shortest path to bring out the worst in people, the while pretending to be this great force for morality, plus the built-in martyr complex that kicks in the instant someone pokes their beliefs instead of simply swallowing them unquestionably. That only demonstrates that all too often faith is as substantial as smoke and mirrors.

If I had to pick just one trait I find the most annoying, it would have to be the Argument From Sheer Volume: the religious insistence that I as an atheist will find their pet god one day - I just haven't heard enough about it yet.
At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist.  This revelation tends to make most people in the universe who have it react in one of two ways - with relief or with despair.  Only Skagra responded to it by thinking, 'Wait a second.  That means there's a situation vacant.'

Welcome, even though I have feeling you are not gonna last long here, lol Tiger

P.S. Does not really drive me mad (pretty much nothing does), but I always been "curious" why Christians do not follow Jesus ??? Thinking

Why is that?

1) That holds back discovery. This is the biggest one for me, medical advances are needed, people are suffering everyday, and some Christians are walking around opposing evolution, stem cells, what have you. If you're anti-science and anti-discovery, you're scum to me.

2) People who think having faith is a great thing, get screwed by psychics and mediums who'd profit on their loved one's death. It also makes them more likely to take alternate medicine and believe in pseudoscience.

3) The whole thing where Christianity condemned gays. A lot have come around, but that will make me hate the religion for quite a while.

4) The lying. The entire enterprise consistently lie to children. That's unacceptable in my book. Granted a lot of people didn't think they were lying, which is why I once again, blame the religion.

You make a good point. I think science is important in our society but I don't think tat Christians are against science. Its some of the theories that throws them off. But if they are just theories then shouldn't we have our own opinion.
I agree that preaching on the streets is retarded. I don't think pastors should be pointing out gays like that. I also believe it is just fine to have gay friends. IT just depends on the Christian you meet.
Lastly about the lying...its all matter of opinion. Christians seem it to be true but others find it to be lying. Just all matter of what you believe to be true or not.

I thank you for your opinion. I had never thought about these things and you have opened up things for me to think of. I hope I don't offend you with anything I said. Smile

Please learn what a scientific theory is. (They should really rename it)

What you and me call a theory the scientists will call a hypothysis. Only once it has insane amounts os evidence and is as close to a fact as you can get in science do they upgrade it to a theory.

It is not an opinion!

Edit: But welcome! As long as you don't get easily offended you will do fine here Smile

@Just-A-Curious-Girl,

No, I'm not actually mad at anyone, your religion just happens to be one of the things I think many will be happier if it didn't exist.

They're scientific theories. Theories to do with facts that exists despite anyone's opinion. The transition that all lifeforms undergo is a fact. That is not a theory. Evolution is the theory that explains this transition so well that it has no contesting or opposing theories. Even if you reject evolution because it is a theory (which, to be completely honest, I have no problem with, I just think it's stupid to say that if you don't know where the theory went wrong), you cannot say there has never been transitions, because those are proven facts. Rejecting that is rejecting reality. This is exactly what I mean about religion giving people an idea that their opinion can alter what is real. It cannot.

I'm curious, how much do you know about evolution? Grade 12 level? Or just books you've read outside of school or university level?

That it is demonstrably false and people act on it as though it were not false.

RE: Just Curious
ALL dogmatic theistic belief systems are harmful. Not just Christianity.

Here are a few of the problems I have with Christianity:

1. The idea of EVERY human born is somehow defective because of something a man created out of dust and a rib woman ate 1000's of years ago is absurd on the face of it. Why would an omniscient deity put the temptation where they could get to it? Not even taking into consideration that dust man and rib woman never existed.

2. That a blood sacrifice was necessary to ameliorate the above absurdity is even more absurd. Here we have an omnipotent deity, and the best he can think of doing is to have his son (which is actually himself) tortured and sacrificed to himself, in order to correct his own mistakes, according to the rules he created? Seriously?! Why couldn't he have just forgiven mankind?

3. That in order to be forgiven for dust man and rib woman's mistake, we have to believe the above, despite a lack of sufficient demonstrable evidence and valid/sound logic to support it.

This is not a system designed by a moral god, and he does not (even if he did exist) merit worship.

The problems I have with Christianity in the real world are:

1. That Christians feel they need to enforce the moral demands of their imaginary god on everyone else.

2. Christians are pretty close to universally hypocrites. The claim morality, but yet the most atheistic countries in the world (Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Norway) have lower crime rates, better health care, lower teen pregnancy rates, lower infant mortality, higher education rates, lower poverty rates, greater chance of upward mobility, etc than the most religious countries, including the US.

3. Christians feel the need to get their creation mythology taught in public school science courses.

If I had more time, I'd go on. I could fill pages.

In general, it is my contention that the more people that held beliefs based on evidence and valid & sound logic, the better for society in general.

You'd believe if you just opened your heart" is a terrible argument for religion. It's basically saying, "If you bias yourself enough, you can convince yourself that this is true." If religion were true, people wouldn't need faith to believe it -- it would be supported by good evidence.
