How did you lose your faith?

RE: How did you lose your faith?
Asking me how I lost my faith assumes that I had any in the first place.
Even if the open windows of science at first make us shiver after the cozy indoor warmth of traditional humanizing myths, in the end the fresh air brings vigor, and the great spaces have a splendor of their own - Bertrand Russell

I lost my faith when I stopped turning to the bible for answers and instead started using critical thinking.
Everything I needed to know about life I learned on Dagobah.

I was 17. For two years me and the preacher's daughter took her Dad's invocation of be fruitful and multiply at face value.

When we quit our practice, the wire hanger manufacturers and quacks damn near went bankrupt.

RE: How did you lose your faith?
I was faithful and I had a theoretical argument for most criticisms posed to religion. I was interested in science especially physics and I used to think scientifically so religion for me needed great efforts to be preserved in my mind. And I was life-loving but devoted religiosity prevented me from enjoying my life as I wish. Many chains and prisons I found myself live with in addition to the default hardness of life. This was beyond endurance. I suffered a lot when I found Allah the greatest burden on my conscience, so I just tried to dismiss him for a short time to have some break. Atheism was just an experiment. But gradually I found myself as someone woke up. Faith was an illusion.

I don't say that atheism is better than faith at all cases. Maybe some people need faith in their lives and it is of course their right, but for me I found it was better to reconcile with reality and with yourself. A good feeling which much people suffer because it isn't there !

I believed in some watered-down hippy god up until I was like 12/13, then I realized through meeting an atheist (without even discussing anything on religion or god) that people did not have any idea if there is a god. So I stayed away from religion and stopped believing in god pretty fast afterwards.

RE: How did you lose your faith?
I honestly can't remember a time when I had faith. Even as a kid (12 stultifying years of Catholic school and Sunday school and Catechism classes), I always felt that something was wrong in the stories we were told. I remember telling a lay brother who was relating the Noah's ark story - I was 8 or 9, I think - that I didn't think the story was right, because you can't put ferrets and rabbits in the same boat.

It was all like that. Everything we were told just seemed a bit...off.
