PSHHH!!  Everyone knows when you make a burnt offering you have to do it with an eggplant dunked in parmesan or the FSM will smite you!  Do you want to drink stale beer for all eternity, Whatevs?  Do you???

Oh hell?  No, I repent.

I'm so mixed up. I can't tell if my feelings are being trampled over, or if I don't have any left. It wouldn't be fair on the person concerned if I were to give her name, so I won't. I just had to go out for a very, very long walk, just to clear my head. Didn't really work; getting to chat to her helped more.

Anyway, had something funny happen on the way back. Lot of zombies are out tonight, all the pissheads and the skanks. We have a deal - I ignore them, they ignore me. As I walked along, one of them came up beside me. I'll give you the broad transcript, bearing in mind I was trying not to pay attention (incidentally, I didn't break stride for any of this, meaning he had to jog to keep up):

Zombo: Yo, bruv!

Me: (ignore)

Zombo: Yo, my man!

Me: I've got no money for you.

Zombo: I wasn't going to ask you for money.

Me: That's good.

Zombo: I just want to ask you for your ear for a few minutes.

From a zombie this is a concerning thing to hear, but I decided to play along:

Me: Right, go on. Ten...

Zombo: I was just wondering...

Me: Nine...

Zombo As I was walking round our beautiful town...

Me: Eight...

Zombo: And you see all the people...

Me: Seven... Speak quicker.

Zombo: And you know, it's a beautiful day...

Me: Six...

Zombo: And the thing is...

Me: Five...

Zombo: You really have to believe and trust in the Lord...

Me: Four three two one go away now.

I waved him away and switched off. He stalked off, still chuntering away to himself, and latched on to someone else.
At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist.  This revelation tends to make most people in the universe who have it react in one of two ways - with relief or with despair.  Only Skagra responded to it by thinking, 'Wait a second.  That means there's a situation vacant.'

It's Oregon. They just don't build a lot of houses there with central air. Something about only needing it a couple months a year. Yeah, well those couple months are fucking miserable.

It's true, they don't, though one of the first things I did with my last house was to get a heat pump installed (even with the cheapest electric rates in the country, a resistive electric furnace is $$$ to run - the heat pump paid for itself within three years).

I'm currently stuck in an apartment in a pretty shitttastic area solely by virtue of the fact that it has a heat pump.

I've lived in at least three Oregon apartments without AC and all were miserable at least three weeks a year.  Right now I'm treadmilling off birthday dinner and enjoying the cold air coming from the register.  I do understand why many don't pay for central AC here though.  It's rarely that hot and one or two single room units make the three weeks that are bearable.

My dad got three little in-wall units at the business equivalent of a garage sale years and years ago and those were enough to keep the master bedroom cool and the living room/kitchen/dining room cool. Didn't do shit for the back bedrooms tho. If I invest in anything I'd probably do a couple wall units. My place is pretty small, two in-wall units would make the whole place ice cold. But alas, SteelCurtain's donation to the cause hasn't arrived yet. Wink

My experience with window units is that they're ultra expensive to run. Last month, I ran my heat pump more or less whenever I wanted to and my electric bill was $85. I'm repeating that test this month, though it's hotter, and I'm running it at a temperature that's comfortable, rather than less-uncomfortable-than-being-outside. I'll know the damage by the weekend. I can remember $400 electric bills to cool a shitty little bungalow in July with window units. Heat pumps are the way to go.
