I just watched Interstellar.

Wow. What a phenomenal movie. Holy Shit.

I loved the first part of the film. Then it got worse for me. Matt Damon's character seemed to serve an a ad hoc introduction of drama. But ok.
I would have liked it even better without the notion that hyperdimensional passages in black holes from the future serve exactly as a connection between daddy and his little girl's childhood memories. No, just no, that erased all the cool sciency bonus points in my book. This mix of hard astrophysics and dreamy psychologizing leaves me very frustrated. I get it, hollywood writers are all liberal arts graduates who were bad at maths, but does every cool thing about the cosmos have to serve as a vehicle for love and nostalgia in such an in your face unsubtle manner? They fucked up Solaris the same way because they, as they admitted themselves, didn't get the philosophical side of the story and instead made the umpteenth love story out of it. Lem was not pleased, and it's the same thing again. Why can't a black hole simply be a black hole, why does everything have to be a heavy handed allegory for human fee fees?/rant

But ok, a movie with relativistic time dilation in the plot, I guess that has to count for something. Gotta read kip thorne's book, I still don't get how they are supposed to escape that black hole orbit with mere rockets. A quick estimate would suggest they would need more than their weight in antimatter to get enough juice.

I liked it, even if it was a love/human spirit of the gaps. But that still ate at me a little. I was well aware that I wasn't reading a Lawrence Krauss book, but the suspension of disbelief sort of bit the dust when he survived a trip through a black hole.

I absolutely had to turn my brain off as much as I could (which is not easy for me) for the Hollywood physics. The story was enough to overcome the gaps in reality for me, and they got enough of the space stuff right to make me happy. After they "placed" the wormhole, I was past the perfect physics stuff.
